🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Tucson, the headlight bulbs are typically replaced from under the hood by removing the rear dust cover, twisting the bulb out, and installing the new bulb without touching the glass. This restores night visibility and helps prevent one side from looking dim or burned out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights off and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes before touching.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your Tucson has factory LED headlights, the “bulb” may not be serviceable separately.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for halogen bulb replacement, but keep the light switch OFF.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip remover
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (left/right) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (left/right) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (they keep oil off the bulb glass).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use your phone camera and flashlight to look at the back of the headlight housing.
  • Most housings have separate sockets for low beam and high beam. If you tell me “low beam only,” “high beam only,” or “both,” I can tailor this exactly.
  • If your headlight has a large sealed module with no removable bulb socket, it may be factory LED (often not a simple bulb swap).

Step 2: Create working room (only if access is tight)

  • If the driver side is tight, remove the air snorkel/duct fasteners using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension.
  • If there are plastic push-clips, pop them up with a trim clip remover (a tool that lifts plastic clips without breaking them).
  • Only move what you must.

Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover

  • From behind the headlight, locate the round/oval cover.
  • Remove the cover by turning it by hand. If it’s stubborn, gently help it start with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t crack the plastic).
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off by hand.
  • If it won’t release, gently press the tab with a small flathead screwdriver while pulling.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Pay attention to the bulb’s alignment tabs (so the new one seats the same way).

Step 6: Install the new bulb (don’t touch the glass)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Twist the bulb clockwise until it fully locks.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol (use a clean lint-free cloth).

Step 7: Reconnect and reseal

  • Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the dust cover and tighten it by hand until snug (it keeps moisture out).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same steps for the other headlight.
  • Replacing in pairs keeps color/brightness even.

Step 9: Reinstall any removed intake duct/clips

  • Reinstall any parts you moved using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and trim clip remover.
  • Make sure nothing is loose near the radiator fan or belts.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low beam and high beam.
  • Check that the dust covers are fully seated (prevents condensation inside the lens).
  • If one side doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully locked.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$140 (parts only)

You Save: $90-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
