🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the bulb replacement method depends on whether the front lamps are halogen or HID/Xenon. The steps below cover the common halogen low-beam and high-beam bulb replacement path; if your lamps are HID, the low beam uses a different service procedure and bulb type.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare hands; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If your Grand Cherokee has HID/Xenon low beams, do not open the ballast area without disconnecting the battery.
  • Keep the ignition off while working around the front lighting harnesses.
  • Use a clean glove or paper towel when handling new bulbs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • High beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights and ignition off.
  • Open the hood and let the lamp housings cool if the lights were recently on.
  • Work slowly around the plastic tabs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the headlamp area

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper fasteners and any access covers that block the rear of the headlamp assembly.
  • If needed, use the trim clip removal tool to release push pins from the upper radiator support trim.
  • Set fasteners in a tray.

Step 2: Remove the low beam bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp housing and locate the low beam bulb socket.
  • Turn the bulb connector counterclockwise with your hand, or unlock the retainer as equipped.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab with your fingers.
  • Remove the old bulb straight out of the housing.

Step 3: Install the new low beam bulb

  • Install the new bulb without touching the glass.
  • Line up the bulb tabs, then seat it fully in the housing.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
  • Lock the bulb or socket back into place by hand.
  • Do not force the bulb.

Step 4: Remove the high beam bulb

  • Locate the high beam bulb at the rear of the same headlamp assembly.
  • Use your fingers to release the connector lock and remove the connector.
  • Remove the bulb from the housing by turning it counterclockwise if equipped with a twist lock, or pull it straight out if it uses a friction fit.

Step 5: Install the new high beam bulb

  • Install the new high beam bulb into the socket or housing.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector and make sure it clicks in place.
  • Reinstall any bulb retainer or cover.

Step 6: Reassemble the front access area

  • Reinstall all trim pieces, covers, and fasteners using the 10mm socket, 8mm socket, and trim clip removal tool as needed.
  • Make sure every clip and screw is back in place before closing the hood.
  • Check for loose trim before driving.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify low and high beams work on both sides.
  • Check that the bulbs are seated evenly and no warning message appears.
  • Close the hood and test the lights against a wall to confirm proper beam output.
