š§ XT5 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your XT5, the exact bulb type and access method depends on whether you have halogen headlights or HID/Xenon headlights. The steps and parts are different, so weāll identify your setup first to avoid buying the wrong bulbs or damaging the headlamp.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-2.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the headlight switch OFF, remove the key, and let bulbs cool before touching anything.
- ā ļø Never touch a new bulbās glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ā ļø If equipped with HID/Xenon, the system uses high voltage; do not power the lights with bulbs removed.
- ā ļø Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the battery positive terminal.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
- Lay a fender cover over the painted edge to prevent scratches.
- Please answer these so I give the exact bulb + exact access steps:
- ā With the lights ON, is the low beam yellowish (halogen) or bright white/blue-ish (HID/Xenon)?
- ā Can you see a round twist-off dust cap on the back of the headlight housing from under the hood?
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify your headlight type (needed for correct steps/parts)
- Turn the headlamps ON briefly, then OFF (use the headlight switch).
- Use an LED flashlight and look through the lens at the bulb area.
- If the light output is yellowish, itās typically halogen. If itās very bright white with a sharp cutoff, itās typically HID/Xenon.
- If unsure, snap a photo of the headlight on.
Step 2: Check access at the back of the headlamp
- With the hood open, use an LED flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly.
- If you can reach a round twist-off dust cap, bulb replacement may be possible without removing the headlamp.
- If access is blocked, the typical next step is removing nearby covers and possibly loosening the front fascia to remove the headlamp assembly.
- A quick photo from behind the headlamp helps.
Step 3: If you have a reachable dust cap (common āeasy accessā path)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the rear dust cap counterclockwise by hand; if tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently at the tab.
- Disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use flat-blade screwdriver only if needed).
- Release the bulb retainer (style varies). If itās a twist-lock bulb, rotate counterclockwise and pull out.
- Install the new bulb without touching the glass (wear nitrile gloves).
- Reconnect the connector and reinstall the dust cap fully seated to keep moisture out.
Step 4: If access is blocked (common āheadlamp removalā path)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the upper plastic push-clips along the top cover near the headlamp.
- Use a ratchet with 7mm socket and 10mm socket to remove any small bolts/screws securing the upper closeout panels.
- Use Torx T15 driver or Torx T20 driver to remove any Torx screws at the edge of the headlamp/trim pieces (varies by build).
- Once the rear of the headlamp is accessible, replace the bulb as in Step 3.
- Important: Reinstall all clips/screws fully; gaps can cause rattles and water leaks.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps for the second headlight so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
- Replacing in pairs gives even lighting.
ā After Repair
- Turn the headlamps ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Check that the dust caps are fully seated and no wiring is pinched.
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even left-to-right.
