🔧 XC60 - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Assuming you’re replacing the low-beam headlight bulbs on your XC60. This job is done from the rear of the headlamp, and on this model it is usually a tight access job, so patience matters. Install both bulbs as a pair so the light color stays even.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the headlamp assembly cool before touching it.
  • Do not touch the glass of halogen or HID bulbs with bare fingers.
  • Use gloves. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If your XC60 is equipped with HID/xenon bulbs, do not force the connector or bulb holder.
  • Keep the key away from the vehicle while working so the lights do not wake up unexpectedly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim panel tool
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlamps are cool.
  • If there is a rear cover or intake duct blocking access, remove it first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlamp.
  • If a plastic cover, intake duct, or air box piece blocks access, remove it using the Torx T25 screwdriver, 10mm socket, and 1/4-inch ratchet as needed.
  • Set fasteners aside in order so they go back where they came from.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves before touching the bulb area.
  • Disconnect the bulb connector if present.
  • Release the bulb retaining clip or twist the bulb holder out by hand, depending on the lamp style.
  • Pull the bulb straight out without forcing it.
  • Do not twist hard on the connector.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Compare the new bulb to the old one to confirm it matches.
  • Insert the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Secure the retaining clip or twist-lock holder back into place by hand.
  • Reconnect the bulb connector firmly.
  • Keep the glass clean.

Step 4: Reinstall access parts

  • Reinstall any ducting, covers, or brackets removed earlier.
  • Use the Torx T25 screwdriver and 10mm socket to reinstall fasteners.
  • Tighten fasteners snugly by hand. Torque to factory snug spec for the removed trim and brackets.

Step 5: Test both lights

  • Turn the ignition on and switch the low beams on.
  • Check that both sides illuminate evenly.
  • If one side does not light, recheck the connector and bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the beam pattern against a wall at night or in a dark garage.
  • Make sure the headlamp covers, ducts, and fasteners are fully reinstalled.
  • If the bulb warning stays on, recheck both connections and bulb fitment.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs to keep brightness and color matched.
