How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Volkswagen Golf
Step-by-step instructions with tools, safety tips, and bulb testing
🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Replacement
Assumption: this is for the halogen low-beam bulbs on your Golf. If your headlights are factory HID or LED, the repair is different and the bulb type/procedure changes.
Replacing both bulbs at the same time keeps the light output even side-to-side. Access is tight, so the job is mostly careful hand work and a little patience.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlights off and remove the key/fob before starting.
- Let the bulbs cool fully before touching them.
- Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers.
- If you are working near the battery or fuse box, keep metal tools away from exposed terminals.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the headlight
- Open the hood and locate the back of the headlight assembly.
- Remove any intake ducting or small covers blocking access if needed.
- Use a Torx T25 screwdriver if a cover or duct fastener is in the way.
- Work slowly in tight spaces.
Step 2: Remove the bulb cover
- Twist or unclip the rear bulb cap by hand.
- If a retaining screw is present, use the Torx T25 screwdriver to remove it.
- Set the cap aside where it stays clean.
Step 3: Disconnect the old bulb
- Unplug the electrical connector from the bulb.
- If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the bulb
- Release the bulb retaining clip or twist the bulb holder, depending on the headlight style.
- Remove the bulb straight out.
- If a clip is used, press it down and swing it aside with your fingers.
- Note the bulb’s orientation before removal.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on mechanic gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
- Lock the retaining clip or twist the holder back into place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector firmly.
Step 6: Reassemble the headlight access area
- Reinstall the bulb cover by hand until it seats fully.
- Reinstall any ducting or covers removed earlier.
- Use the Torx T25 screwdriver if any fasteners were removed.
Step 7: Test both headlights
- Turn the ignition on and switch on the headlights.
- Check that both sides light up and match in brightness.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
✅ After Repair
- Close the hood carefully.
- Check the headlight aim against a wall at night.
