🔧 Headlight Bulb - Replacement

This covers replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Highlander. The bulbs are changed from the rear of the headlamp housings, so you do not need to remove the entire headlight assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool completely before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want the safest possible access, but it is not strictly required for bulb replacement.
  • Keep the ignition off while working around the headlamp connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flat trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • If you want extra working room, remove the plastic radiator cover clips near the front edge.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlight housing.
  • If needed, use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove any nearby intake duct or cover that blocks access.
  • If there are plastic retainers in the way, remove them with the trim clip tool.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp and disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • If the bulb has a retaining cap or dust cover, remove it by hand first.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Install the new bulb into the socket the same way the old one came out.
  • Insert the bulb and socket into the headlamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not force the connector.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps for the other headlight bulb.
  • Make sure both bulbs are fully seated and locked.

Step 5: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any covers, ducts, or clips you removed.
  • Close the hood.
  • Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
  • Check that the beam pattern looks even on both sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm both headlights illuminate at the same brightness.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
  • If the lamp still does not work, inspect the fuse and wiring for that circuit.
