How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Toyota Highlander
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing guidance
🔧 Headlight Bulb - Replacement
This covers replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Highlander. The bulbs are changed from the rear of the headlamp housings, so you do not need to remove the entire headlight assembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool completely before touching them.
- Do not touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Oil can shorten bulb life.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want the safest possible access, but it is not strictly required for bulb replacement.
- Keep the ignition off while working around the headlamp connectors.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the headlamp
- Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlight housing.
- If needed, use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove any nearby intake duct or cover that blocks access.
- If there are plastic retainers in the way, remove them with the trim clip tool.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the old bulb
- Reach behind the headlamp and disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket.
- If the bulb has a retaining cap or dust cover, remove it by hand first.
Step 3: Install the new bulb
- Put on gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Install the new bulb into the socket the same way the old one came out.
- Insert the bulb and socket into the headlamp housing.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Do not force the connector.
Step 4: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same removal and installation steps for the other headlight bulb.
- Make sure both bulbs are fully seated and locked.
Step 5: Reassemble and test
- Reinstall any covers, ducts, or clips you removed.
- Close the hood.
- Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
- Check that the beam pattern looks even on both sides.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm both headlights illuminate at the same brightness.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
- If the lamp still does not work, inspect the fuse and wiring for that circuit.
