How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander (Low & High Beam)
Step-by-step bulb replacement for H11 or D4S low beams and 9005 high beams, with tools, parts, and safety tips
🔧 Outlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs by accessing the bulb holders from behind the headlight assemblies in the engine bay. The steps are similar side-to-side, but the bulb type can differ depending on whether your Outlander has halogen or HID (xenon) low beams.
Assumption: Your Outlander may have either Halogen low beams (H11) or HID low beams (D4S); steps below include both paths.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (they get extremely hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch glass on halogen/HID bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use nitrile gloves.
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID (xenon): the system uses high voltage—disconnect the battery before opening the bulb/igniter area.
- ⚠️ Keep keys away from the vehicle so lights can’t auto-turn on while you work.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Low beam headlight bulb (HID D4S) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear covers on the back of each headlight.
- If you have HID low beams: disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. (The negative terminal is the “-” side.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (Low vs High beam)
- Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight assembly.
- Typically, the low beam uses a larger round rear cover, and the high beam is a separate socket nearby.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
Step 2: Make room on the tight side (if needed)
- If access is tight, remove the upper plastic snorkel/cover near the headlight using a trim clip removal tool and/or Phillips #2 screwdriver (fastener style varies by location).
- If a small bracket or neck blocks access, remove its bolts with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the rear cover counterclockwise by hand, or gently work it free while lighting the area with a flashlight.
- Set the cover aside where it won’t pick up dirt.
Step 4 (Halogen Low Beam - H11): Remove the bulb
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use nitrile gloves for grip).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it straight out.
- Don’t force it—re-check the twist direction.
Step 5 (Halogen Low Beam - H11): Install the new bulb
- Without touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Rotate clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
Step 6 (HID Low Beam - D4S): Remove the bulb (HID-equipped)
- Confirm the battery negative terminal is disconnected using a 10mm socket.
- Remove the rear cover (if equipped) by hand, using a flashlight to see the tabs.
- Carefully disconnect the igniter/connector from the bulb (it may twist-lock or unclip depending on style—move slowly and gently).
- Release the bulb retainer (usually a metal spring clip or twist ring) and pull the bulb straight out.
- HID parts are fragile—slow hands win.
Step 7 (HID Low Beam - D4S): Install the new bulb (HID-equipped)
- Install the new bulb in the exact same orientation; it must seat fully.
- Re-lock the retainer.
- Reconnect the igniter/connector securely.
Step 8 (High Beam - 9005, if you’re doing those too): Replace the bulb
- Disconnect the connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flashlight to see the tab clearly).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise 1/4 turn and remove.
- Install the new 9005 bulb (no glass touching), rotate clockwise to lock, and reconnect the connector.
Step 9: Reinstall covers and any removed pieces
- Reinstall the dust cover(s) by hand and twist clockwise until fully seated.
- Reinstall any snorkels/brackets using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- If you removed clips, press them back in by hand or with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 10: Restore battery connection (HID-equipped only)
- Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify both sides work on low beam and high beam.
- Walk in front of the vehicle and confirm both beams look similar in brightness and color.
- If a halogen bulb was touched, replace it (or clean with alcohol and let dry) to prevent early failure.
- Check that all dust covers are sealed—this prevents moisture inside the headlight.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $20-$180 (parts only, depends on halogen vs HID)
You Save: $80-$150+ by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
