🔧 Sorento - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing the headlight bulbs on your Sorento is usually done from inside the engine bay (or sometimes through the front wheel-well). The key is using the correct bulb type and not touching the bulb glass with your fingers.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
Assumption: “Headlight bulbs” = low-beam bulbs on both left and right sides; I also included the common high-beam path in case that’s what you meant.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID (xenon) low beams, the system can generate high voltage—disconnect the battery negative cable before opening the dust cover.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen/HID bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle safely if you access bulbs through the wheel-well (use jack stands).

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔦 Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
- 🔋 If your Sorento has HID low beams, disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high beam)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp for two rear access areas (often one for low beam and one for high beam).
- If access is too tight from the engine bay, you’ll use the wheel-well access method in Step 5.
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)
- Reach behind the headlamp and twist the round plastic dust cover counterclockwise by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use nitrile gloves for more grip and turn steadily. Don’t pry on the lens.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector tab and pull straight back by hand.
- If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers gently on the tab only (do not crush the connector body).
Step 4A: Replace LOW BEAM bulb (common on SX: HID xenon)
- If you see a metal retaining ring or twist-lock base, unlock it by turning counterclockwise by hand.
- Carefully remove the old HID bulb straight out.
- Install the new HID bulb in the same orientation (it only seats one way). Do not touch the glass.
- Lock the retaining ring by turning clockwise by hand until fully seated.
- Reconnect the electrical connector by pushing it on until it clicks.
Step 4B: Replace LOW BEAM bulb (if your Sorento uses halogen)
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise by hand and pull the bulb out.
- Install the new halogen bulb (same orientation), then twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the electrical connector by pushing it on until it clicks.
Step 4C: Replace HIGH BEAM bulb (typical halogen)
- Twist the high-beam bulb base counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Install the new halogen bulb and twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 5: Wheel-well access method (only if you can’t reach from above)
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on to create more space.
- Remove the wheel-liner fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, 10mm socket, and trim clip removal tool.
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp. (The “wheel liner” is the plastic inner fender panel.)
- Repeat Steps 2–4 to replace the bulb, then reinstall all fasteners.
Step 6: Reinstall dust covers and reassemble
- Reinstall the dust cover by turning clockwise by hand until fully seated (keeps moisture out).
- If removed, reinstall any air ducting/covers using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight
- Replace the bulb on the opposite side using the same method.
- Always replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
✅ After Repair
- 🔋 If disconnected, reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket (snug—do not overtighten).
- 💡 Turn the headlights ON and verify low beams and high beams work on both sides.
- 🔎 Check that dust covers are fully seated to prevent fogging/condensation inside the headlamp.
- 🚗 At night, confirm beam pattern looks even; if one side looks off, the bulb may not be fully seated.
