How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Jeep Renegade (Low Beams)
Step-by-step wheel-well access instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and torque specs

🔧 Renegade - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs by accessing the back of each headlamp housing (usually through the front wheel-well liner). This restores proper night visibility and keeps you legal/safe on the road.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID/LED headlamps, do not power the system with the bulb/module unplugged; high voltage may be present on HID systems.
- ⚠️ If you lift the vehicle, support it with jack stands on solid points—never rely on a floor jack alone.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Wheel chocks
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- 17mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (3/8" drive)
- 7mm socket
- Trim clip remover (panel tool)
- Flashlight
- Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (pair) - Qty: 1
- Wheel liner push clips - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the steering wheel to give access to the wheel well you’re working on.
- If you’re lifting the vehicle, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before jacking.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make space to reach the headlamp (one side at a time)
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (this opens up the wheel-well access area).
- If your hands don’t fit comfortably, lift that corner of the vehicle using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- If you remove the wheel for extra room: loosen lug nuts with a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, remove the wheel, then reinstall later and Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).
Step 2: Open the wheel-well liner access to the bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the small access area on the front portion of the wheel-well liner (closest to the headlight).
- Remove the fasteners with a 7mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 3" extension (3/8" drive).
- Remove any plastic push-clips using a trim clip remover (panel tool). (A panel tool is a forked pry tool made to pop clips out without breaking them.)
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp housing.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Find the bulb socket at the back of the headlight housing using a flashlight.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back (use nitrile gloves for grip).
- Rotate the bulb/socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (don’t touch the glass)
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing (match the tabs), then rotate clockwise until it locks fully.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
- Tip: If touched, wipe glass with alcohol.
Step 5: Quick function check
- Turn the headlights ON and verify the new bulb works (use a flashlight only if needed—don’t stare into the beam).
- Turn the headlights OFF again before reassembly.
Step 6: Reassemble the wheel-well liner and (if removed) the wheel
- Reposition the liner and reinstall screws using a 7mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 3" extension (3/8" drive).
- Reinstall push-clips using a trim clip remover (panel tool) to seat them squarely.
- If the wheel was removed, reinstall it and Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the other headlight bulb.
âś… After Repair
- Verify both low beams work, and check high beams/parking lights to ensure nothing else was disturbed.
- Take a short night drive and confirm the light pattern looks even left-to-right.
- If a bulb doesn’t light: re-check the connector is fully clicked and the bulb is fully locked in the housing.
