🔧 X5 - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

On your X5, headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housings in the engine bay. The exact bulb type depends on whether you have halogen headlights or xenon/LED-style headlights, so I’m giving both paths below (you’ll follow the one that matches your headlight setup).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ If equipped with xenon (HID) low beams, the system can produce very high voltage—turn lights OFF, remove key, and wait at least 5 minutes before touching anything.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlights cool first; bulbs and housings can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of any bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended for xenon/HID bulbs: disconnect negative terminal before opening the xenon bulb/igniter.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4")
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool set
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlight rear cover gasket/seal (if damaged) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the steering wheel straight, set the parking brake, and turn the headlight switch OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlight for round rear access covers.
  • If your low beams are xenon/HID (often marked “XENON” on the lens), disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and wait 5 minutes.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create working room (if needed)

  • If access is tight, remove nearby plastic ducting or covers using a Torx T20 screwdriver, Torx T25 screwdriver, and plastic trim tool.
  • Set fasteners aside in a small tray so nothing gets lost.

Step 2: Remove the headlight rear access cover

  • From behind the headlight, twist the round rear cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a plastic trim tool set gently at the edge—don’t crack the cover.
  • Inspect the rubber seal; if torn or flattened, plan to replace it to prevent moisture inside the headlight.

Step 3: Identify your bulb type (choose the matching path)

  • Halogen setup (common indicators): bulb has a simple 2-pin plug and a spring clip or twist-lock base.
  • Xenon/HID low beam setup (common indicators): bulb has an igniter/locking ring on the back and warning labels; the bulb is typically a HID capsule.
  • Tip: Replace left and right bulbs as a pair.

Step 4A: Replace a halogen bulb (if equipped)

  • Pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
  • If there is a metal spring clip, press and swing it open by hand; if it’s a twist-lock, rotate the bulb base counterclockwise by hand.
  • Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb in the same orientation.
  • Reconnect the plug firmly until fully seated.
  • Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.

Step 4B: Replace a xenon/HID low beam bulb (if equipped)

  • Confirm the battery negative terminal is disconnected using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the igniter/connector by releasing its lock and turning it counterclockwise (this is the round piece attached to the bulb base).
  • Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (usually a twist-lock) and remove the old bulb straight out.
  • Install the new HID bulb fully seated and locked in the same orientation.
  • Reinstall the igniter/connector and ensure it locks in place.
  • Tip: Do not force it—alignment matters.

Step 5: Repeat for the other headlight and for high beams (if replacing both)

  • Move to the other side and repeat Steps 2–4 using the same method.
  • If your high beam is a separate halogen bulb, it will typically be under its own rear cover—remove that cover and replace the high beam bulb the same way as Step 4A.

Step 6: Reinstall covers and any removed ducting

  • Reinstall the rear access covers and twist clockwise until fully seated.
  • Reinstall any ducts/covers removed earlier using Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: low beams, high beams, turn signals, and daytime running lights.
  • Check the cluster/iDrive for bulb warnings. If a warning remains, re-check connectors and that the rear cover is fully sealed.
  • At night, verify both beams match in color and brightness; mismatched color usually means bulbs weren’t replaced as a pair.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $220-$550 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$260 (parts only, depends on halogen vs xenon/HID)

You Save: $180-$290 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.5 hours.
