How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma (Trim: SR)
Step-by-step halogen bulb replacement with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement
Assumption: This guide is for the factory halogen headlamps on your Tacoma. If you have LED or aftermarket housings, the bulb procedure is different.
Replacing both headlight bulbs at the same time helps keep light output even from side to side. On this truck, access is usually from behind the headlamp assemblies, so you do not need to remove the front bumper for a simple bulb swap.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the headlights cool down before touching them. Hot bulbs can burn you.
- Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers. Oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- Turn the headlights off and remove the key before starting.
- If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets. Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
- Make sure the new bulb locks fully into place so moisture does not get inside the headlamp.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Latex or nitrile gloves

- Wear gloves before handling the new bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight assembly
- Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp assembly.
- Use your hand first to check for room around the bulb covers.
- If access is tight on one side, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any nearby air intake duct fasteners or small brackets blocking the rear cover.
- Work slowly to avoid broken clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb cover
- Twist the round or rectangular rear dust cover counterclockwise by hand, or release its retaining clip if equipped.
- Set the cover aside where it will stay clean.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back.
- Use your fingers to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise, then pull the bulb straight out.
- If a retaining spring is present, use a small pick tool to release it carefully.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Put on clean gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Align the new bulb tabs with the housing and insert it straight in.
- Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks, or reinstall the retaining spring if equipped.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 5: Reinstall the cover and repeat on the other side
- Reinstall the rear dust cover by turning it clockwise or snapping it back into place.
- Reinstall any ducting or brackets removed earlier using the 10mm socket.
- Repeat the same steps on the other headlight.
Step 6: Test the lights
- Turn the ignition on and switch on the headlights.
- Check low beam and high beam operation on both sides.
- Make sure the beam pattern looks even.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm both bulbs light up without flickering.
- Check that the dust covers are fully sealed.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
- Dispose of the old bulbs carefully; do not throw broken glass loose in the trash.
