🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: this is for the low-beam headlight bulbs. On your Tacoma, both sides are replaced from the engine bay, and the job is usually quick once you clear a little working room.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool completely before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Use the parking brake and keep the key off.
  • If you need extra room, disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the harness.
  • Handle the bulb socket gently so you do not break the locking tabs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights off and open the hood.
  • If you want more room on the driver side, remove the air intake duct if needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the headlight access covers

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlight assembly.
  • Find the round or capped access cover behind the low-beam bulb.
  • Take a quick photo before removing parts.

Step 2: Make room on the driver side if needed

  • If your hand space is tight, use the 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and short extension to remove the intake duct fasteners.
  • Lift the duct out carefully and set it aside.
  • This gives you room to reach the bulb socket.

Step 3: Remove the bulb access cover

  • Turn the cover counterclockwise by hand, or release the tabs if equipped.
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside cleanly.
  • Keep dirt out of the headlight housing.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back.
  • Release the bulb from the headlight housing by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Pull the bulb out carefully without forcing it.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same position as the old one.
  • Turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Reconnect the bulb connector until it clicks.
  • Do not touch the glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Set the cover back in place and turn it clockwise, or press the tabs fully closed.
  • Make sure the seal sits evenly so moisture stays out.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same process for the second bulb.
  • Use the same tools and the same fitment steps.

Step 8: Reinstall the intake duct if removed

  • Put the duct back in place.
  • Reinstall the 10mm fasteners and snug them down.
  • Do not overtighten the plastic parts.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and check both low beams.
  • Confirm both bulbs are seated evenly.
  • Check that the beam pattern looks normal against a wall or garage door.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb lock.
