🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs means removing the old bulbs from the back of each headlamp housing and installing new matched bulbs. Doing both sides together keeps the light output even and helps avoid one dim bulb with one bright bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the headlights cool before touching the bulbs. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Do not touch the glass on a new halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Turn the headlight switch off before starting.
  • If you need more room, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Work carefully around the headlamp sockets so you do not crack the bulb or damage the connector.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • For easier access, remove the air intake snorkel or upper air duct only if it blocks access to the back of the headlamp. A trim clip removal tool is used to pop out plastic clips without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlight housing.
  • If the intake duct blocks access, use the trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips and lift the duct out.
  • Keep clips in a small tray.

Step 2: Remove the bulb connector

  • Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the electrical connector from the bulb.
  • If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it by hand. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • If it does not turn easily, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the bulb base, not the glass.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves and handle the new bulb by the base.
  • Align the tabs, insert the bulb into the housing, and twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
  • Match the bulb tabs before twisting.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps on the opposite headlight.
  • Use the same tools and make sure both bulbs are seated fully.

Step 6: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any removed intake duct or clips.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reconnect the negative cable using the 10mm wrench.
  • Turn on the headlights and check both low beams and high beams if equipped.

✅ After Repair

  • Park 10-15 feet from a wall and verify both beams are even.
  • Check that both bulbs illuminate with no flicker.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb twist lock.
  • If the beam looks crooked, inspect the bulb seating before driving at night.
