🔧 Rogue - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
This will walk you through changing the headlight bulbs on your Rogue, both left and right. You’ll access the bulbs from under the hood, remove the old bulbs, and install new ones without taking the whole headlight out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the headlights.
- ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool down if the vehicle has been running (hot parts can burn you).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can make them burn out early.
- ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and hair away from moving parts and the cooling fan area.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery negative terminal for extra safety, always remove negative (-) first and reconnect it last.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🧾 Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧾 Turn off headlights and ignition, and remove the key.
- 🧾 Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- 🧾 Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- 🧾 If you feel safer, you may disconnect the battery negative terminal using the 10mm socket, but it is not strictly required for bulb replacement.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing
- 🛠️ Stand in front of your Rogue and look at one headlight assembly: the low beam is the main bulb used at night; the high beam is the inner, more intense light.
- 🛠️ This guide covers both low beams (H11) and high beams (9005); the process is similar, but the bulb sockets are separate.
- 🛠️ Use a flashlight from above to see the back of the headlight housing so you can spot the bulb connectors and plastic caps.
Step 2: Access the driver-side headlight area
- 🛠️ On the driver side, open the hood and look behind the headlight; you’ll see round plastic covers on the back of the headlight housing.
- 🛠️ If any plastic intake duct or cover blocks your hand, gently release its plastic clips using the flat trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver and move it slightly aside (no bolts should need removal).
- 🛠️ Take a picture before moving anything.
Step 3: Remove the driver-side low-beam bulb (H11)
- 🛠️ Put on disposable nitrile gloves to avoid touching bulb glass with bare skin.
- 🛠️ Reach behind the headlight and locate the low-beam cover (usually the larger round cap toward the outer side of the vehicle).
- 🛠️ Twist the plastic cover counterclockwise by hand to remove it; use the small flathead screwdriver gently if the cover tab is tight.
- 🛠️ Inside, locate the bulb base and its wiring connector.
- 🛠️ Press the release tab on the connector with your thumb or the small flathead screwdriver and pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- 🛠️ Grasp the bulb base firmly and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock, then pull it straight out of the housing.
Step 4: Install the new driver-side low-beam bulb
- 🛠️ Take one new H11 low-beam bulb from the box, holding it only by the plastic base.
- 🛠️ If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it gently with a clean lint-free cloth before installing.
- 🛠️ Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the inside of the bulb connector (not on the glass).
- 🛠️ Align the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing, insert the bulb straight in, and twist clockwise until it stops and feels secure.
- 🛠️ Reconnect the wiring connector to the bulb; push until you feel or hear a click.
- 🛠️ Reinstall the round plastic cover by lining it up and twisting clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Replace the driver-side high-beam bulb (optional but recommended)
- 🛠️ Locate the high-beam bulb access on the same headlight; it is usually the inner round cover closer to the center of the vehicle.
- 🛠️ Twist that cover counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- 🛠️ Disconnect the wiring connector from the high-beam bulb by pressing the tab with your thumb or the small flathead screwdriver and pulling straight back.
- 🛠️ Twist the old 9005 high-beam bulb counterclockwise and pull it out.
- 🛠️ Install the new 9005 bulb: hold by the base, align the tabs, insert, and twist clockwise until locked.
- 🛠️ Reconnect the wiring connector, then reinstall the plastic cover by twisting it clockwise until snug.
Step 6: Access the passenger-side headlight area
- 🛠️ Move to the passenger side and open the hood area above that headlight.
- 🛠️ You’ll see the windshield washer filler neck near the back of the headlight; this can make space a bit tight.
- 🛠️ If needed for more room, gently pull the washer filler neck upward slightly after releasing its retaining tab with the flat trim removal tool; do not force it.
- 🛠️ Use the flashlight to see the back of the headlight and locate the same round plastic covers as on the driver side.
Step 7: Replace the passenger-side low-beam bulb (H11)
- 🛠️ With nitrile gloves on, twist the low-beam cover counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- 🛠️ Press the connector tab with your thumb or small flathead screwdriver and unplug the connector from the bulb.
- 🛠️ Twist the bulb base counterclockwise and pull the old H11 bulb out.
- 🛠️ Take a new H11 low-beam bulb, hold by the base, and avoid touching the glass.
- 🛠️ Lightly apply dielectric grease inside the connector again.
- 🛠️ Insert the bulb into the housing, align tabs, and twist clockwise until firmly locked.
- 🛠️ Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks, then reinstall the plastic cover by twisting clockwise.
Step 8: Replace the passenger-side high-beam bulb (9005, optional)
- 🛠️ Locate the inner round cover for the high beam and twist it counterclockwise to remove.
- 🛠️ Press the locking tab and unplug the connector from the bulb using your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver gently if needed.
- 🛠️ Twist the old 9005 high-beam bulb counterclockwise and pull it out.
- 🛠️ Install the new 9005 bulb, making sure the tabs are aligned, then twist clockwise until it seats firmly.
- 🛠️ Reconnect the wiring connector and reinstall the cover by twisting clockwise.
- 🛠️ Push the washer filler neck back into its clip if you moved it earlier; no torque spec is needed, just a firm snap into place.
Step 9: Reinstall anything you moved and check your work
- 🛠️ Make sure all plastic covers on the back of the headlights are fully locked clockwise; they keep out water and dust.
- 🛠️ Reattach any intake duct clips or plastic retainers you popped loose by pressing them back by hand or with the flat trim removal tool to help push evenly.
- 🛠️ If you disconnected the battery earlier, reinstall the negative (-) terminal with the 10mm socket until snug; do not overtighten. Torque to 5–6 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition to ON and switch the headlights to the low-beam position; walk to the front and make sure both low beams are lit and look similar in brightness and color.
- ✅ Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams turn on and off correctly.
- ✅ Check around the headlight areas for any loose covers, dangling wires, or parts not clipped back in.
- ✅ Take a short night drive on a safe, straight road to confirm the light pattern looks normal and not aimed too high or too low.
