šŸ”§ Forte - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from under the hood by removing the bulb access cap, unplugging the connector, and twisting the bulb out. This restores safe nighttime visibility and prevents one dim/burned bulb from overworking the other.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You mean both LOW-beam bulbs (left + right).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (they get very hot).
  • āš ļø Keep the key off and remove it from the car before starting.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø If a bulb is stuck, don’t force it—plastic housings can crack.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (commonly H11) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the headlights and ignition OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can see the back of each headlight.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Have the new bulbs out of the package and ready, but keep the glass protected.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlight housings

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlight assembly (behind the headlight lenses).
  • Use a flashlight to identify the round dust cap (or the bulb connector area) on the back of the housing.

Step 2: Remove the dust cap (if equipped)

  • Grip the cap and turn it counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
  • If it’s tight, gently help it start with a small flathead screwdriver at the cap’s edge, then continue by hand.
  • Set the cap somewhere clean.

Step 3: Unplug the bulb electrical connector

  • Press the small locking tab on the connector and pull straight back.
  • If it won’t release, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently press the tab while you pull.
  • Wipe any dirt away with a clean shop towel.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn until it unlocks.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to note how the tabs on the bulb base are oriented (this helps the new bulb seat correctly).

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean using a clean shop towel (dry) before installing.

Step 6: Protect the connector and reconnect

  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the electrical connector (this helps prevent corrosion).
  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the dust cap and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall the dust cap by turning it clockwise until fully seated.
  • Repeat Steps 2-6 for the other headlight bulb (left and right).

Step 8: Quick aim check (simple check)

  • At dusk or in a shaded area, turn on the low beams and confirm both sides are equally bright.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm both dust caps are installed and no wiring is hanging near belts or fans.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON (low beam), then switch to high beam to confirm proper operation.
  • If one side doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and re-check that the connector clicked fully into place.
  • Close the hood and take a short nighttime drive to confirm good visibility.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$100 (parts only)

You Save: $90-$150 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
