🔧 Equinox - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
You’ll be replacing the headlight bulbs on both sides of your Equinox by going in through the front wheel-well access doors. This keeps the front bumper on the vehicle and is the method used in the factory service info.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool if the vehicle was just driven; parts can be very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can cause them to burn out early.
- ⚠️ Set the parking brake and keep the transmission in Park.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required, but avoid switching lights on while your hands are in the headlight area.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔩 Low beam headlight bulbs (H11) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
- 🔩 High beam headlight bulbs (9005) - Qty: 2 (optional but recommended as a pair)
- 🔩 Headlight bulb access door clips (front inner fender, if damaged) - Qty: 2–4
- 🔩 Disposable nitrile gloves - Qty: 1 box
- 🔩 Shop towels - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- 📝 Park the Equinox on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 📝 Turn off all lights and remove the key from the ignition.
- 📝 If you’ll raise the front, position the floor jack under the front subframe crossmember, then support with jack stands at the factory front jacking points.
- 📝 Decide now if you’re doing low beams only or both low and high beams; access is similar, so doing all four bulbs now saves time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Position the wheels for access
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the left to work on the right (passenger) headlight.
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the right later to work on the left (driver) headlight.
- If needed, raise the front slightly with the floor jack and support with jack stands to gain extra room.
Step 2: Remove the wheel-well access panel (passenger side)
- Put on your mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Use the work light or flashlight to locate the small rectangular access door in the front part of the passenger-side wheel-well liner.
- Use the flat trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the clips or tabs holding the access door.
- Carefully pull the access panel off and set it aside.
- If any 7mm screws are present holding the panel, remove them with the 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet and extension, then keep the screws in a safe place. Torque on reinstall: 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Take a picture so you remember how it sits.
Step 3: Identify low beam vs high beam sockets
- Look through the opening toward the back of the headlight housing.
- The low beam (H11) bulb is usually the outboard/lower socket.
- The high beam (9005) bulb is typically the inboard/upper socket.
- Note the bulb orientation and connector style before removal. This helps when reinstalling blind.
Step 4: Remove the passenger-side low beam bulb
- Reach in and locate the low beam bulb socket.
- Grasp the bulb base firmly with your gloved hand.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it from the housing.
- Pull the bulb straight back to remove it.
- Press the tab on the electrical connector with a finger, and pull the connector straight off the bulb base.
- Do not pull on the wires; only the plastic plug.
Step 5: Install the new passenger-side low beam bulb
- Open the new H11 low beam bulb package carefully.
- Without touching the glass, connect the vehicle’s electrical plug to the bulb’s connector until it clicks.
- Optional: Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the rubber seal on the connector to help keep moisture out.
- Guide the bulb into the headlight opening, aligning the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the housing.
- Once fully seated, rotate the bulb clockwise about 1/4 turn until it stops and feels locked.
- If it won’t turn, remove and realign the tabs.
Step 6: Replace the passenger-side high beam bulb (optional but recommended)
- Locate the high beam (9005) socket (inboard/upper) through the same access opening.
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight off.
- Connect the new 9005 bulb (no touching the glass), and apply a small amount of dielectric grease on the connector seal if desired.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, align the tabs, then rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
Step 7: Reinstall the passenger-side access panel
- Align the wheel-well access door with its opening.
- Snap the tabs or clips back into place by hand.
- If there were 7mm screws, reinstall them with the 7mm socket, ratchet, and extension, tightening lightly. Torque: 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Snug only; don’t crush the plastic.
Step 8: Repeat access panel removal on the driver side
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the right for driver-side access.
- Use the work light or flashlight to locate the driver-side front wheel-well access door.
- Again, use the flat trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to release the clips or tabs.
- If present, remove any 7mm screws with the 7mm socket and ratchet. Torque on reinstall: 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Remove the access panel and set aside.
Step 9: Replace driver-side low beam bulb
- Locate the low beam (H11) bulb on the driver side (outboard/lower position).
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight off.
- Connect the new H11 bulb without touching the glass and, if desired, apply a small amount of dielectric grease on the connector seal.
- Insert the bulb into the housing, align tabs, and rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until locked.
Step 10: Replace driver-side high beam bulb (optional)
- Locate the high beam (9005) socket (inboard/upper position).
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing.
- Disconnect the connector, then attach it to the new 9005 bulb.
- Insert the bulb into the housing, align the tabs, then rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn to lock.
Step 11: Reinstall the driver-side access panel
- Align the driver-side access door with the opening in the wheel-well liner.
- Snap tabs/clips in by hand.
- Install any 7mm screws with the 7mm socket and ratchet. Torque: 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
Step 12: Lower the vehicle (if raised)
- Use the floor jack to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands from both sides.
- Lower the Equinox slowly to the ground with the jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and switch on the low beams; confirm both sides are working.
- ✅ Switch to high beams and confirm both sides are working.
- ✅ Walk around the front and check that both beams look similar in brightness and color.
- ✅ Take a short night drive and verify that the light pattern looks normal and not aimed unusually high or low.
- ✅ If a bulb does not light, recheck the connector plug and that the bulb is fully seated and rotated into the locked position.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120–$200 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $40–$90 (parts only, depending on bulb type)
