Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing guidance for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024
🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement
Assumption: this guide is for the replaceable low-beam/ headlight bulbs accessible from the back of the headlamp housing. If your truck has factory HID or LED headlights, the procedure is different.
This job is straightforward, but space is tight behind the headlamps. Replacing both bulbs at the same time keeps light output even and saves you from doing the same work twice.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlights off and remove the key fob before starting.
- Let the bulbs cool down first. Hot bulbs can burn you.
- Do not touch the glass on a halogen bulb. Skin oil shortens bulb life.
- Use a clean glove or paper towel when handling new bulbs.
- If you need more hand room, disconnect the negative battery cable. This is not always required, but it is safer around the front lighting harness.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch off.
- Open the hood and support it fully.
- If the battery cable will be removed, save any radio presets first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the back of the headlamp
- Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
- On your Ram, space is limited, so remove any intake tube or small cover that blocks access if needed.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and extension bar if a cover or bracket must come off.
Step 2: Remove the bulb connector
- Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the electrical connector from the bulb.
- Press the lock tab before pulling so you do not damage the plug.
- Pull straight back.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing.
- If your bulb uses a retaining ring or clip, release it carefully before removing the bulb.
- Use your gloves so you do not touch the glass.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same position as the old one.
- Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Match the tabs before turning.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same removal and install steps for the second bulb.
- Replacing both bulbs together helps keep the beam color and brightness even.
Step 6: Reassemble and test
- Reinstall any air duct, cover, or bracket you removed.
- Use the 10mm socket if fasteners were removed.
- Close the hood and turn the headlights on to confirm both sides work.
✅ After Repair
- Check both low beams, high beams, and turn signals if the lamp assembly was moved.
- Make sure the headlight beam aim looks normal on a wall or garage door.
- If one side does not light, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
