How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2015-2024 Ram 1500 (Dual or Quad Headlamps) (Trim: Express)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools, correct bulb identification, safety tips, and final beam checks for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024
🔧 1500 - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
On your 1500, the headlight bulbs twist-lock into the back of the headlamp housing. The main “gotcha” is that there are two factory headlamp styles, and the bulb types differ—so we’ll cover both paths.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (they get extremely hot).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep keys out of the ignition while working.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look at the back of one headlamp housing.
- Identify your headlamp style:
- Quad headlamps: two separate bulbs per side (one high beam, one low beam).
- Dual headlamps: one main bulb per side (does both high and low).
- Quick question (so I can tell you the exact bulb set to buy): do you have quad (two bulbs per side) or dual (one bulb per side) headlights?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make sure you’re replacing the correct bulb(s)
- Turn the headlight switch ON briefly, then OFF.
- Verify which function is out (low beam vs high beam) by watching the light pattern.
- Replace left and right bulbs together.
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlamp housing
- Stand at the fender and look behind the headlamp housing.
- If space is tight, remove the closest intake duct cover/air inlet pieces using an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and trim clip removal tool.
- A trim clip tool is a small forked tool that pops plastic push-clips out without breaking them.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently—don’t pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the bulb from the headlamp
- Grab the bulb base and rotate it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- If using dielectric grease, apply a tiny dab inside the connector seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Repeat for the other side (and other bulb if quad-style)
- Repeat Steps 2-5 on the other headlamp.
- If you have quad headlamps, repeat for both the low beam bulb and high beam bulb (each side) as needed.
Step 7: Reinstall any intake/trim pieces you removed
- Reinstall ducts/covers and push-clips using the trim clip removal tool.
- Tighten any bolts snugly using the 8mm socket or 10mm socket (hand-tight; do not over-tighten plastic parts).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low beam and high beam.
- At night, park 20-25 feet from a wall and confirm both beams look even (no obvious “one side higher” issue).
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, re-check the connector is fully clicked and the bulb is fully twist-locked.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depends on bulb type/brand)
You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
