🔧 Renegade - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the two main headlight bulbs (left and right). This restores night visibility and prevents one side from burning out shortly after the other.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves; bulb glass oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔥 Let the headlight housing cool if it was recently on.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended if your hands/tools may touch wiring.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Flat trim tool
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have the correct bulbs

  • Use your flashlight to look behind each headlight for a removable round rear cover (the “dust cap,” which seals the housing).
  • If you see a removable dust cap and a twist-lock bulb, you have serviceable halogen bulbs.
  • If you do not see a removable bulb/socket and the back looks like a sealed LED unit, skip to Step 9.

Step 2: Create working room on the left headlight (driver side)

  • Use a flat trim tool to gently unclip and move any nearby plastic ducting that blocks your hand access.
  • If the washer fill neck is in the way, pull it upward to unclip it from its holder (it’s designed to move for service).
  • Tip: Move parts gently; don’t force clips.

Step 3: Remove the left headlight dust cap

  • Reach behind the left headlight and remove the dust cap by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
  • Set the cap where it won’t get dirty (it needs to seal well).

Step 4: Remove the left headlight bulb

  • Disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back.
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise (usually about a quarter-turn) and pull it out.
  • Tip: Note the tab positions before removal.

Step 5: Install the new left bulb (no touching glass)

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (it helps prevent moisture and corrosion).
  • Insert the new bulb in the same orientation, then twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 6: Reinstall the left dust cap

  • Install the dust cap and turn it clockwise until fully seated and sealed.

Step 7: Create working room on the right headlight (passenger side)

  • If access is tight, use the 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen the intake hose clamp just enough to move the air intake duct a little.
  • Move the ducting aside without kinking or cracking it.

Step 8: Replace the right bulb (same method as left)

  • Remove the dust cap by hand (counterclockwise).
  • Disconnect the connector, twist the bulb out, and remove it.
  • Install the new bulb (gloves on), twist to lock, and reconnect the connector.
  • Reinstall the dust cap fully seated.

Step 9: If your Renegade has LED headlights (bulb not serviceable)

  • If there is no removable bulb/dust cap and the unit appears sealed, the “bulb” is part of the headlamp assembly/module.
  • At that point, replacement typically involves replacing the headlamp assembly and may require aiming/calibration afterward.
  • If you tell me whether your headlights are halogen or LED, I’ll give you the exact correct procedure path.

Step 10: Reconnect battery (if disconnected)

  • Reinstall the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides light up on low beam and high beam (as equipped).
  • Check that both dust caps are fully sealed (helps prevent condensation inside the lens).
  • At night, verify the beam pattern looks even and not aimed too high.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
