🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: your F-150 has standard halogen headlamps. This job is straightforward and usually done from the engine bay with no bumper removal. Replacing both bulbs at the same time keeps beam color and brightness matched.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare hands; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want extra safety while working near wiring.
  • Keep the hood secure and stay clear of the radiator fan area.
  • If your truck has LED or HID headlamps, this bulb replacement procedure does not apply.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the light switch off and remove the key or keep the ignition off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool.
  • Work on one side at a time so you can compare the old and new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the headlamp area

  • Open the hood and locate the back of the headlamp housing.
  • If access is tight, use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove any air duct or cover blocking the rear of the headlamp.
  • Set removed clips or fasteners aside in order.

Step 2: Remove the first bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the bulb connector by hand.
  • Use your fingers to twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  • If the bulb is stuck, use a flat blade screwdriver gently on the retaining tab.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing and twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical plug firmly.
  • Do not touch the glass.

Step 4: Replace the second bulb

  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps on the other side.
  • Use the same tools and make sure both bulbs are seated fully.

Step 5: Reinstall any removed covers or ducts

  • Put back any air duct, cover, or fasteners you removed using the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Make sure nothing is left loose in the engine bay.

Step 6: Test the lights

  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both bulbs light up.
  • Check low beam, high beam, and turn signal operation if you had to move nearby parts.
  • Test before closing the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both beams are even and the bulbs are fully seated.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
  • Close the hood carefully after the final test.
