Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools, parts list, safety tips, and post-install testing for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
🔧 Canyon - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the two front headlight bulbs (left and right). This restores brightness and keeps your lights matched in color and output, which helps night visibility and safety.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
Assumption: your Canyon uses halogen low-beam bulbs (commonly H11).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for 10+ minutes; hot bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil shortens bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3" extension
- Trim clip tool
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
- Put on nitrile gloves (helps you avoid touching bulb glass).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make room to reach the bulbs
- On the passenger side, access may be tight near the air intake duct.
- If needed, use a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension to loosen/remove any small retaining bolts holding a duct/cover in the way, then move it aside carefully.
- If you encounter plastic push-clips, remove them with a trim clip tool (a forked pry tool used to lift clips without breaking them).
- Tip: Take a quick phone photo before moving parts.
Step 2: Remove the electrical connector
- At the back of the headlamp, find the bulb connector.
- Press the locking tab, then pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently while pulling; do not yank on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Compare the new bulb to the old one to confirm the same style and tab layout.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, keeping it straight and fully seated.
- Rotate clockwise until it locks in place (snug by hand).
- Tip: If you touched the glass, clean with rubbing alcohol.
Step 5: Reconnect and protect the connector
- Add a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the connector seal (optional but helpful for moisture protection).
- Push the connector onto the bulb until you feel/hear it click.
Step 6: Repeat on the other headlight
- Use the same process for the other side.
- Reinstall any duct/cover/clip hardware you moved using the 10mm socket and trim clip tool.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Check high beams and turn signals too, just to be sure nothing was bumped loose.
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even on a wall; if one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully seated.
