🔧 GLA - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing headlight bulbs on your GLA is usually done from inside the engine bay by removing the rear cover on each headlamp, swapping the bulb, and sealing everything back up. The key is installing the new bulb in the exact same orientation and not touching the glass.
Assumption: Your GLA has halogen headlamps with replaceable bulbs (most common). If your GLA has factory HID (xenon) or full LED headlamps, the bulb/type and access can be different.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool down; bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can cause early failure.
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID (xenon), the system uses high voltage; do not work on it powered up.
- ⚠️ Make sure the rear headlamp cover is sealed after—water intrusion can ruin the headlamp.

- Torx T25 driver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 1/4" extension (3"-6")
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (halogen, commonly H7 55W) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam bulb (if replacing too; type varies by headlamp option) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Put on nitrile gloves (thin protective gloves) so you don’t contaminate the bulb.
- Take a photo before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Get access to the back of each headlamp
- Use a flashlight to locate the round/oval rear cover on the back of each headlamp housing.
- If something is blocking access (intake snorkel, small ducting, or a cover), remove it carefully:
- Use a Torx T25 driver to remove any Torx screws holding a duct/cover.
- Use a trim removal tool set to pop any plastic push-clips straight up.
- If a bracket uses nuts, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" extension (3"-6") to remove them.
Step 2: Remove the rear headlamp cover
- Grip the rear cover and rotate it counterclockwise, or release its tabs (varies by headlamp cover style).
- Set the cover aside where it won’t get dirty—dirt on the seal can cause leaks.
Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector
- Use your fingers (gloved) to pull the electrical connector straight off the back of the bulb.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—do not yank the wires.
Step 4: Release the bulb retainer and remove the old bulb
- Most halogen setups use a spring clip retainer.
- Press the spring clip in and swing it down to release the bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
- Note the bulb’s “keyed” position.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one (it only fits correctly one way).
- Re-lock the spring clip so the bulb is firmly seated and does not wiggle.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with alcohol and let it dry fully before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect the connector and reinstall the rear cover
- Push the electrical connector back on until it feels fully seated.
- Reinstall the rear cover and make sure it is fully locked all the way around.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps for the other headlamp so both bulbs match in color and brightness.
Step 8: Reinstall any ducts/covers you removed
- Use a Torx T25 driver to reinstall any Torx screws you removed.
- Use a trim removal tool set to reinstall any push-clips.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to reinstall any 10mm fasteners snugly (do not over-tighten plastic mounts).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and switch on low beams to confirm both headlights work.
- Check high beams and turn signals while you’re there.
- Look at the beam pattern against a wall at night; if one side looks “off,” the bulb may not be seated correctly—recheck seating and the retainer clip.
- Watch for condensation inside the headlamp over the next day—this usually means the rear cover seal isn’t fully seated.
