🔧 Legacy - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the two headlight bulbs (left and right) by accessing the back of each headlight housing from under the hood. The key is making enough room on each side, then swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Assumption: Your Legacy uses halogen low-beam bulbs (common fitment is H11). If your bulbs are different, match the part number printed on the old bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the headlights cool fully before touching anything.
- đź‘“ Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your hands and eyes.
- 🔌 Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid short circuits.
- 🧼 Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- đź’ˇ Do not force the bulb; it should twist in/out smoothly.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Phillips screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Torque wrench (5-25 ft-lbs range)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Shop towel

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- 🔌 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- 🧠Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent corrosion in electrical connectors.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
Step 2: Make room to access the driver-side bulb
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
- Lift the battery straight up and set it on the ground (keep it upright).
- Tip: Take a quick photo before removal.
- When reinstalling later: Torque battery hold-down nuts to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the driver-side low beam bulb
- Locate the low-beam bulb at the back of the headlight housing.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off (use your fingers, not a screwdriver).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If there’s a rubber dust boot, peel it back carefully and reinstall it later the same way.
Step 4: Install the new driver-side bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs, then rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the bulb glass).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 5: Make room to access the passenger-side bulb
- Locate the windshield washer filler neck near the passenger-side headlight.
- Use a trim clip removal tool (or Phillips screwdriver if needed) to release the retaining clip/fastener.
- Gently move the filler neck aside to create working space.
Step 6: Remove and install the passenger-side low beam bulb
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and remove it.
- Install the new bulb (gloves on), rotate clockwise to lock, then reconnect the connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Reassemble
- Reinstall the washer filler neck fastener using the trim clip removal tool or Phillips screwdriver.
- Reinstall the battery and hold-down using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
- Tighten the battery hold-down: Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal: Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- đź’ˇ Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- 🔦 Check that the bulbs are seated evenly (no flicker, no dim side).
- 🧠At night, verify beam aim looks even; if one looks “off,” reseat that bulb.
- 🧼 If you accidentally touched the bulb glass, wipe it with a shop towel lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol, then let it dry.
