🔧 Legacy - Headlight Bulb Replacement

This job replaces the bulbs in both headlight assemblies (left and right). On your Legacy, the bulbs twist-lock into the back of the headlight housing, so you usually don’t need to remove the bumper or the whole headlight.

Assumption: You mean the main headlight bulbs (low beams). I’ve included high-beam steps too since they’re right next to them.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• Open the hood and make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
• Lay a towel over painted areas near the headlight to avoid scratches.
• Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create working room (as needed)

• Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight for access space.
• If one side is too tight, remove the nearby plastic snorkel/cover clips using a trim clip removal tool.
• If you need extra room on the battery side, loosen the battery hold-down using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension, then gently shift the battery slightly (do not strain cables). Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 2: Remove the low beam bulb (H11) on the first side

• Reach behind the headlight and find the low beam bulb connector (it plugs straight onto the bulb).
• Press the connector lock tab (use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed) and pull the connector straight off.
• Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
• Tip: Note the bulb “ears” so the new one lines up.

Step 3: Install the new low beam bulb (H11)

• Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
• Insert the new bulb into the housing (same orientation as the old one), then twist clockwise to lock.
• Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out).
• Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.

Step 4: Repeat low beam replacement on the other side

• Use the same process: unplug, twist out, install new bulb, reconnect.
• Reinstall any snorkels/covers and clips you removed using the trim clip removal tool.

Step 5: Optional — Replace high beams (9005) on both sides

• Find the high beam bulb (usually the inner bulb, closer to the grille).
• Unplug the connector by pressing the lock tab; use a small flathead screwdriver only if the tab is stubborn.
• Twist the bulb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn and remove it by hand.
• Install the new 9005 bulb, twist clockwise to lock, then reconnect the plug.

Step 6: Re-secure anything you loosened

• If you moved the battery, tighten the hold-down using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension. Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs)
• Make sure all plastic clips are fully seated by pressing them in by hand.

✅ After Repair

• Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
• Turn high beams ON (if replaced) and confirm the blue high-beam indicator lights up on the dash.
• If a bulb doesn’t light: turn lights OFF, re-check the connector is fully clicked in.
• At night, verify the beam pattern looks even side-to-side.
