🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Replacement
Your F-150 can use different headlamp setups depending on the factory lighting package. Below are the two common paths: halogen bulb replacement and HID/xenon capsule replacement. Use the section that matches the bulb you’re replacing so you don’t damage the headlamp assembly.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and let the headlamp housing cool before starting.
- If your truck has HID/xenon bulbs, do not touch the bulb glass with bare hands.
- HID systems can carry high voltage. Shut the vehicle off and wait before unplugging anything.
- Do not stare directly into an active headlamp.
- No battery disconnect is usually required for halogen bulb replacement.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the headlamp area
- Open the hood.
- Remove the upper radiator cover fasteners using a 10mm socket and ratchet if they block access to the rear of the headlamp.
- Keep fasteners in a tray.
Step 2: Remove the rear headlamp dust cover
- Reach behind the headlamp assembly and twist off the rear dust cover by hand.
- If tight, gently help it loose with a flat-blade trim tool.
- Set the cover aside where it stays clean.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- If halogen: unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off.
- If HID/xenon: disconnect the igniter connector first, then release the bulb retainer.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise if the design uses a twist-lock base, or release the spring clip if equipped.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Insert the new bulb into the socket in the same orientation as the old one.
- Do not touch the glass on halogen or HID bulbs with bare fingers.
- Rotate clockwise to lock it in place, or reinstall the retaining clip if equipped.
- Reconnect the electrical connector firmly.
Step 5: Reinstall the dust cover
- Install the rear dust cover and twist it clockwise until fully seated.
- Make sure the seal is even all the way around.
Step 6: Test both headlights
- Turn the ignition on and switch on the low beams, then the high beams.
- Confirm both sides illuminate evenly.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb orientation.
✅ After Repair
- Check headlight aim on a flat surface at night.
- Make sure the beam pattern matches side to side.
- If a warning message appears, recheck the bulb type and connector fit.
