🔧 Forester - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Forester, the headlight bulbs are serviced from inside the engine bay (behind each headlight). The job is mostly “twist the bulb out, don’t touch the glass, twist the new one in,” but access can be tight on one side.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn lights off and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you must disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and disconnect the negative terminal first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip remover
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulbs (verify correct bulb type) - Qty: 2
  • High-beam headlight bulbs (verify correct bulb type) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.
  • Identify what you’re replacing: low beam vs high beam (they are separate bulbs). Low beam is used most.
  • If you’re unsure, tell me: are you replacing low beams only (most common “both headlights”), or low + high?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Get access behind the headlight

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to find the rear of the headlight assembly (you’ll see round dust covers and/or bulb sockets).
  • If access is tight, use a trim clip remover to pop out nearby plastic push-clips so you can gently move an intake duct or cover for more room.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Grab the bulb’s connector (the plug on the back of the bulb).
  • Press the release tab and pull straight back.
  • If it’s stuck, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body (do not pull on the wires).

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Set the old bulb aside.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • Put on nitrile gloves if you aren’t already wearing them.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks fully in place.
  • If it won’t lock, it’s misaligned—don’t force it.

Step 5: Reconnect and test

  • Push the connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm the repaired side works.
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 on the other headlight so you replace bulbs in pairs.

Step 6: Reinstall any clips/covers you moved

  • Reposition any ducts/covers you moved.
  • Press any push-clips back in by hand; use the trim clip remover only if you need to align them.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify low beams (and high beams if replaced) work on both sides.
  • Check aim on a wall at night; if one beam looks noticeably higher/lower, tell me and I’ll walk you through headlight aiming.
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, swap that bulb to the other side to confirm it’s not a connector issue.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$90 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Two quick questions so I match the exact bulbs:

  • Which “both headlight bulbs” do you mean: both low beams only, or low + high?
  • Are your current headlights halogen (yellowish light) or HID/LED (very white/blue, usually with a ballast)?
