🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing headlight bulbs is usually a quick job done from under the hood, but the exact bulb and steps depend on whether your Grand Cherokee has halogen headlights or factory HID (xenon) headlights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and let bulbs cool for 10-15 minutes before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID (xenon), the system can carry high voltage; do not unplug the ballast with the lights on.

- Open the hood and support it securely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Quick check (needed before steps): Identify your headlight type
- Look at the headlight lens: a “projector” lens with a blue/white tint and “D” style bulb usually indicates HID; a more standard reflector style usually indicates halogen.
- If you’re not sure: tell me if your headlights say “D3S” or “H11/9005” on the bulb/box, or send a quick photo of the back of the headlight housing.
Step 1: Access the bulb (rear of headlamp)
- Use a flashlight to locate the round dust cap or bulb socket at the back of the headlight assembly (driver and passenger sides).
- If a plastic cover/air guide is in the way, use a trim clip removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to pop the push-clips up (work gently so the clips don’t break).
Step 2: Remove the dust cap (if equipped)
- Use your hand to twist the cap counterclockwise and pull it off.
- Set the cap where it won’t collect dirt.
Step 3A (Halogen): Remove the old bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab with your thumb (use a small flathead screwdriver only if the tab is stubborn).
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
Step 3B (HID/Xenon): Remove the old bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Make sure the lights have been OFF for several minutes.
- Carefully disconnect the igniter/connector from the bulb (release the lock; use a small flathead screwdriver gently if needed).
- Rotate the bulb retaining ring (or bulb base) counterclockwise and remove the bulb straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Keep nitrile gloves on and avoid touching the bulb glass.
- Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 5: Reassemble
- Reinstall the dust cap (twist clockwise to lock).
- Reinstall any covers/air guides and push-clips using a trim clip removal tool (or by hand).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color/brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low beam and high beam.
- If a bulb doesn’t light: turn lights OFF, re-check the connector is fully seated, and confirm the bulb is locked in place.
- Check aim at night on a flat wall; if the pattern looks uneven, tell me and I’ll walk you through aiming.

Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)
