🔧 Transit Connect - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each headlamp housing, swap the bulb(s), and reinstall everything in the same order. Doing it this way gives you enough hand room and helps prevent breaking the bulb or the connector.

Assumption: Your Transit Connect has halogen headlamps (most XL models) using an H7 low-beam bulb; if your bulb base doesn’t match, stop and compare before installing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlamps OFF and let the bulbs cool before touching them (hot glass can burn you).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the headlamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for halogen bulb replacement, but keep the light switch OFF.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (low beam, H7 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlight bulb (high beam, H1 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look at the back of each headlamp so you understand what you’ll be removing.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the headlamp housing (one side at a time)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the headlamp mounting fasteners at the top of the headlamp.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the upper headlamp mounting screws.
  • Carefully pull the headlamp housing straight forward to release the lower locating peg/clip.
  • If a trim clip is in your way, remove it with a trim clip removal tool (this tool “forks” under the clip and pops it out).
  • Tip: Wiggle gently, don’t pry hard.

Step 2: Disconnect the wiring and access the bulb

  • Support the housing with one hand so it doesn’t pull on the harness.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector(s) by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Remove the rear dust cap (if equipped) by twisting it by hand and pulling it off.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Identify which bulb you’re replacing (most commonly the H7 low beam).
  • If your bulb is held by a spring clip, unhook the clip by hand and swing it open (a spring clip is a small wire latch that holds the bulb tight).
  • Pull the bulb straight out, noting its orientation (tabs line up one way only).

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves and install the new bulb without touching the glass.
  • Seat the bulb fully in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Re-latch the spring clip (if equipped) so the bulb can’t move.
  • Reinstall the rear dust cap by hand (make sure it seals evenly).

Step 5: Reconnect and reinstall the headlamp housing

  • Reconnect the electrical connector(s) until they click.
  • Guide the headlamp back into place, aligning the lower locating peg/clip first, then push the housing rearward until it seats.
  • Install the upper mounting screws using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs)

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other headlamp so both bulbs match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlamps on and confirm both low beams work, then test high beams.
  • Check that the rear dust caps are fully seated to keep moisture out.
  • At night, verify beam aim looks even; if one side looks off, the housing may not be fully seated.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand/type)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
