How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2013-2020 Ford Fusion (Halogen or HID)
Step-by-step bulb swap with tools/parts list, safety tips, and fitment notes for low & high beams for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
š§ Fusion - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing the headlight bulbs on your Fusion is usually done from under the hood by removing the dust cover and twisting the bulb socket out of the headlamp housing. The main challenge is tight space on each side, so you may need to move a few intake/battery covers for access.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
Assumption: Youāre replacing both front headlight bulbs (left + right). Your Fusion may have Halogen or HID (Xenon) low beamsāsteps below include both paths.
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the headlight switch OFF, remove the key, and let bulbs cool for 10 minutes (bulbs get extremely hot).
- ā ļø Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use nitrile gloves.
- ā ļø If equipped with HID/Xenon, the igniter/ballast can produce high voltageāavoid probing connectors and consider disconnecting the 12V negative terminal before unplugging the bulb.
- ā ļø Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the cooling fan area.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (Halogen type, commonly H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Low beam HID/Xenon bulb (commonly D3S, if equipped) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam bulb (commonly 9005, if equipped) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Headlamp dust cover gasket/seal (if damaged) - Qty: 2
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for the round dust cover (the cap that keeps moisture out).
- If you determine you have HID/Xenon: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the 12V negative battery terminal and isolate it so it canāt spring back. This reduces shock risk.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool that pops plastic clips without breaking them.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb type you have (Halogen vs HID)
- Use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlamp.
- If you see a large square/metal module and āHID/Xenonā style wiring going to the bulb, follow the HID path in Step 5.
- If you see a simple twist-in bulb socket with a 2-wire plug, follow the Halogen path in Step 5.
Step 2: Create working room (passenger side)
- On the passenger side, access is often tight near the air intake.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to loosen the air intake/airbox fasteners as needed to move the duct slightly.
- If plastic clips are present, pop them using a trim clip removal tool.
- Reinstall fasteners later and Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) if you removed airbox bolts (typical small M6 fastener torque).
Step 3: Create working room (driver side)
- On the driver side, access is often tight near the battery cover/fuse area.
- Remove the battery cover if it blocks your hand access (it typically lifts off). Use a small flathead screwdriver only if a tab needs gentle help.
- If you loosen any 10mm hold-down/retainer fasteners for access, use a 10mm socket and reinstall to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) (typical small retainer torque).
Step 4: Remove the headlamp dust cover (each side)
- Reach behind the headlamp and remove the round dust cover by hand.
- If itās tight, use a nitrile glove for grip and wiggle it off evenly. Donāt tear the seal.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb (choose your equipment)
- Halogen path:
- Press the connector tab and unplug the bulb using your fingers (no tools if possible).
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
- HID/Xenon path:
- Ensure the 12V negative terminal is disconnected (from āBefore You Beginā).
- Unplug the igniter/bulb connector by releasing its lock tab using a small flathead screwdriver gently.
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (varies by housing) by turning it counterclockwise by hand, then pull the bulb straight out.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (each side)
- Wear nitrile gloves and handle the bulb by the base only.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Lock it in by twisting clockwise until fully seated (do not overtighten; it should stop firmly).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Reinstall the dust cover and any components you moved
- Reinstall the headlamp dust cover by hand, making sure itās fully seated all the way around (this prevents moisture/fogging).
- Reposition the intake duct/airbox pieces and install fasteners using an 8mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for small airbox bolts if removed (typical).
Step 8: If HID, reconnect the 12V battery
- Reconnect the 12V negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) (typical battery terminal clamp torque).
ā After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both left and right lights work (low beams, and high beams if you touched them).
- Check the dust covers again after testing to ensure theyāre sealed and not pinched.
- At night, aim the car at a flat wall and confirm the beams look even. Uneven aim can reduce visibility.
- If you get a headlamp warning (more common on HID), recheck the connector is fully seated and locked.
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$350 (parts + labor, varies a lot for HID)
DIY Cost: $30-$220 (parts only, halogen vs HID)
You Save: $90-$130+ by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
