🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: this guide is for the low-beam headlight bulbs on both sides of your Explorer. The bulbs sit behind the headlamp housing and are usually replaced from the engine bay without removing the whole headlight assembly.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Open the hood and make sure the lights are off.
• Let the headlamp area cool if the lights were recently on.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlamp

• Open the hood.
• Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet if any nearby air duct or cover blocks access.
• Move any hose or intake duct gently out of the way.
• Take a quick photo before moving parts.

Step 2: Remove the bulb cover

• Use your hand or a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the rear dust cover, if equipped.
• Turn the cover counterclockwise or pull it straight off, depending on the style.
• Set the cover aside where it stays clean.

Step 3: Disconnect the old bulb

• Use your hand to unplug the bulb connector.
• If it is tight, gently wiggle the connector while pulling straight back.
• Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

• Use your hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter-turn.
• Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
• Do not force it.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

• Wear gloves and avoid touching the glass.
• Align the tabs on the new bulb with the slots in the housing.
• Use your hand to twist the bulb clockwise until it locks.
• Reconnect the bulb connector until it clicks.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and any removed parts

• Put the dust cover back on by hand.
• Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall any duct or cover you removed.
• Make sure nothing is left loose in the engine bay.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

• Perform the same steps on the opposite headlamp.
• Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color.
