🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Assumption: Your CX-5 is equipped with replaceable halogen headlight bulbs. If your Grand Touring has factory LED headlights, the bulb is not serviceable and the complete headlamp assembly must be replaced instead.

This job is straightforward, but access is tight. You’ll work from behind the headlamp through the engine bay and replace one bulb at a time so you can compare the old and new parts. Avoid touching the glass on halogen bulbs with bare hands.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key/fob before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool completely before touching them. Hot bulbs can burn skin.
  • Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers. Oil spots can shorten bulb life.
  • If you have LED headlights, do not attempt bulb removal. The assembly is the service part.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and let the front of the vehicle cool if it was recently driven.
  • If you are replacing only one failed bulb, it is still best to replace both sides in pairs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlight housing.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet if any nearby covers or intake ducts block access.
  • Remove any plastic covers carefully with a flat trim tool.
  • Keep fasteners in a tray.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the bulb connector by hand.
  • If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the plug body, not the wires.
  • Release the bulb retaining clip or twist-lock retainer, depending on bulb position, using your fingers.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Lock the retaining clip or twist retainer back into place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not force the bulb.

Step 4: Reassemble the access area

  • Reinstall any removed ducts, covers, or fasteners using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Make sure nothing is left loose behind the headlamp.

Step 5: Test the lights

  • Turn the headlights on and check low beam, high beam, and both sides.
  • Confirm the beam is bright and steady with no flicker.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both headlights aim the same and illuminate evenly.
  • If the dash shows a bulb warning, recheck the connector and bulb type.
  • If you replaced halogen bulbs, avoid touching the glass during installation.
