🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Assumption: This guide is for replacing both front low-beam headlight bulbs on your Beetle with halogen bulbs.

The bulbs are replaced from the front of the headlamp housing. The job is simple, but space is tight, so work carefully and avoid touching the glass part of the new bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool completely before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass of a new halogen bulb with bare fingers.
  • If the bulb access is tight, do not force the connector or housing.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool (small)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Switch the headlight control to OFF.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlight housing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the bulb access cap or rear cover.
  • If a cover is in the way, use a flat trim tool (small) to gently release it.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the bulb.
  • Release the bulb retaining clip or twist-lock, depending on what you find.
  • Remove the bulb straight out of the housing.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Compare the new bulb to the old one before installing.
  • Using gloves, insert the new bulb into the socket in the same orientation.
  • Lock it in place with the retaining clip or twist-lock.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not touch the glass.

Step 4: Reinstall the cover and repeat on the other side

  • Reinstall the rear cover or access cap by hand.
  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite headlight.
  • Make sure both bulbs are fully seated and sealed.

Step 5: Test the lights

  • Turn the ignition on and switch the headlights on.
  • Check that both low beams work.
  • Confirm the beam pattern looks even on both sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both headlights in low beam and high beam mode.
  • Look for any warning lights on the dash.
  • If one side does not light, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
