🔧 Camry - Headlight Bulb Replacement

This job replaces the front headlight bulbs from behind the headlamp housings in the engine bay. New bulbs restore safe nighttime visibility and prevent one side from being dimmer than the other.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You mean the two main low-beam bulbs (left + right). I also list high-beam bulb info in the parts section in case that’s what you meant.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use nitrile gloves or clean paper towel.
  • ⚠️ Keep the car OFF (READY light off) and the key/fob away from the car while working.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for bulb replacement, but never probe orange high-voltage cables.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and make sure the car is not in READY mode.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see the bulb sockets.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the low-beam bulb sockets

  • Use a flashlight and look behind each headlamp assembly from inside the engine bay.
  • The low-beam bulb is the main headlight bulb (not the small parking light).

Step 2: Remove anything blocking access (if needed)

  • If a plastic air duct/cover blocks your hand, remove the plastic clips using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently work it out with needle-nose pliers. Pull straight to avoid breaking it.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb. Use a flashlight to see the tab clearly.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn to unlock.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (do not touch glass)

  • Still wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry paper towel before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Gently tug it to confirm it’s locked.

Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the other side.
  • Replacing both keeps color and brightness matched.

Step 8: Reinstall any ducts/covers you removed

  • Reinstall clips by hand, then press them fully seated.
  • Use needle-nose pliers only if you need gentle help aligning a clip.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work and look equally bright.
  • Check high beams and turn signals too, just to confirm nothing was bumped loose.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights off and re-check the connector is fully seated and the bulb is locked in place.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$80 (parts only, depending on bulb brand)

You Save: $60-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
