🔧 Camry - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll be changing the headlight bulbs from under the hood by accessing them from the back of each headlight. This guide covers both low beam and high beam halogen bulbs on your Camry.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the headlights.
- ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool completely if the car was recently driven.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of any new bulb with bare fingers; oil can make the bulb fail early.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, your radio presets and clock may reset.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves; you’ll be working in tight spaces with plastic and metal edges.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🧰 10mm socket
- 🧰 10mm combination wrench
- 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
- 🧰 3" ratchet extension
- 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (4-6 mm tip)
- 🧰 Needle-nose pliers
- 🧰 Mechanic gloves
- 🧰 Safety glasses
- 🧰 LED work light or flashlight

- 🔩 High beam headlight bulbs (9005, halogen) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- 🔩 Bulb socket seals/gaskets (headlight) - Qty: 2–4 Only if existing seals are cracked
- 🔩 Dielectric grease (for bulb connectors) - Qty: 1 small tube
- 🔩 Shop towels or clean paper towels - Qty: 2–4
- 🔩 Isopropyl alcohol wipes - Qty: 2–4 For cleaning bulb glass if touched
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- For extra safety, you may disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench:
- Loosen the nut on the negative (-) terminal and lift the cable off.
- Wrap the cable end in a towel so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
- Identify which bulbs you’re changing:
- Low beam: outer projector-style lamp (used most of the time).
- High beam: inner reflector lamp (used with high beams/flash-to-pass).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the driver-side headlight
- With the hood open, stand in front of the car and look behind the driver-side headlight from inside the engine bay.
- Use the LED work light to see the back of the headlight housing.
- You will see round plastic caps on the back:
- Outer cap (toward fender) = low beam (H11).
- Inner cap (toward center of car) = high beam (9005).
- Check which beam you are replacing before removing caps.
Step 2: Remove the dust cap (driver-side, chosen bulb)
- Place one hand on the round plastic dust cap.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the cap straight back to remove it.
- If it’s stuck, gently pry the edge with a flathead screwdriver while twisting by hand.
- Set the cap aside where it won’t get dirty.
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Look inside the opening: you’ll see the bulb base with a plastic connector plugged into it.
- Press down on the small locking tab of the connector with your thumb or a flathead screwdriver.
- While pressing the tab, pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- If it’s very tight, gently wiggle it while pulling, or use needle-nose pliers on the connector body (not the wires).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grasp the bulb’s plastic base.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Do not drop it inside the engine bay; hold it firmly.
- Compare the removed bulb to your new bulb to confirm you have the same type (H11 for low beam, 9005 for high beam).
Step 5: Prepare the new bulb
- Take the new bulb out of its package, holding it only by the plastic base.
- Do not touch the glass. If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with an alcohol wipe and let it dry.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the connector (not on the bulb pins) to help prevent corrosion.
- Lay a clean towel nearby to rest the bulb if needed.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (driver-side, chosen beam)
- Align the tabs on the bulb’s base with the matching slots in the headlight housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the opening without forcing it.
- Turn the bulb clockwise about a quarter turn until it stops and feels locked in place.
- Make sure the bulb is fully seated and does not wiggle.
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Take the headlight connector and line it up with the bulb terminals.
- Push the connector straight onto the bulb until you feel or hear a click.
- Gently tug on the connector to make sure it is locked and won’t come off.
Step 8: Reinstall the dust cap
- Inspect the rubber seal on the dust cap; if it’s cracked, replace it.
- Place the cap over the opening on the back of the headlight.
- Turn the cap clockwise until it snugly locks into place.
- Proper sealing keeps moisture out of the headlight.
Step 9: Repeat for the other driver-side bulb (if doing both low and high)
- If you’re replacing both low and high beams, repeat Steps 2–8 for the other dust cap and bulb on the same side.
- Remember:
- Outer cap = low beam (H11).
- Inner cap = high beam (9005).
Step 10: Repeat the process on the passenger side
- Move to the passenger side of your Camry.
- Access is similar, but space can be slightly tighter due to nearby components.
- Use the LED work light to clearly see the dust caps.
- Repeat Steps 1–9 for each bulb you’re replacing on this side.
- If anything blocks access, gently move hoses or wiring aside; do not pull hard.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery (if you disconnected it)
- Place the negative (-) cable back onto the battery terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket or 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
- Tighten to about 5 N·m (3.7 ft-lbs) – snug but not overly tight.
Step 12: Test the headlights
- Sit in the driver’s seat and turn the ignition to ON.
- Turn on the headlight switch to low beams and check that both sides light up.
- Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work.
- Walk around the front of the vehicle and look for:
- Both sides equally bright.
- No flickering.
- No condensation or gaps around the dust caps.
âś… After Repair
- Check that the headlight beams are roughly at the same height on a wall at night. If they look uneven, a shop can adjust aim.
- Make sure there are no warning lights on the dash related to lighting.
- Re-enter your radio presets and clock time if the battery was disconnected.
- Re-check after a couple of days that the headlight lenses are dry inside (no moisture buildup).
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120–$200 (parts + labor for both sides, both beams)
DIY Cost: $30–$70 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)
You Save: $90–$130 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–0.7 hours.
