🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Grand Cherokee involves accessing the rear of each headlamp assembly through the front wheel well service openings. This model uses separate bulbs depending on whether you are replacing the low beam, high beam, or HID capsule, so match the bulb type to the lamp you are servicing before installation.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition completely off before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ If your Grand Cherokee has HID low beams, HID systems can produce very high voltage. Do not turn the lights on with the bulb or connector removed.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of any new bulb. Oil from your fingers can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended if equipped with HID headlights or if you are uncomfortable working around electrical connectors.
- ⚠️ Work on level ground with the parking brake set.

- Wheel well liner push clips - Qty: As needed
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key or keep the push-button ignition fully off.
- Turn the steering wheel fully left to access the right-side bulb, then fully right to access the left-side bulb.
- If disconnecting the battery, use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal and move it aside so it cannot touch the post.
- A trim clip remover is a flat fork-shaped tool used to pop plastic clips out without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the First Headlight Opening
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you are working on to create more room in the wheel well.
- Use a flashlight to find the round or oval service access cover in the front wheel well liner.
- Use a flat trim clip remover to carefully release any plastic push clips holding the access panel.
- If a clip has a center pin, use a small flathead screwdriver to lift the center pin first, then pull the clip out.
- Go slow with old plastic clips.
Step 2: Remove the Headlight Dust Cap
- Reach through the wheel well access opening toward the back of the headlight.
- Use your hand to rotate the rear dust cap counterclockwise.
- Pull the dust cap straight rearward and set it somewhere clean.
- A dust cap is the round cover that seals dirt and moisture out of the headlamp housing.
Step 3: Disconnect the Old Bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the electrical connector on the rear of the bulb.
- Press the connector lock tab with your thumb or a small flathead screwdriver.
- Pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb
- Hold the bulb base firmly with your fingers.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- If the bulb does not move easily, gently wiggle the base while keeping it straight.
- Never force the bulb sideways.
Step 5: Install the New Bulb
- Open the new bulb package while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Hold the new bulb only by the plastic or metal base.
- Line up the locking tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks firmly in place.
- No torque spec applies to the bulb because it locks by hand pressure only.
- If touched, clean glass with alcohol.
Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the new bulb until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.
- Use a flashlight to verify the connector is fully seated and not crooked.
Step 7: Reinstall the Dust Cap
- Inspect the dust cap seal by hand. Replace the seal or cap if it is torn, cracked, or missing.
- Place the dust cap back over the rear of the headlight opening.
- Rotate the cap clockwise until it is fully seated.
- The cap must seal tightly to prevent moisture inside the headlight.
Step 8: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Turn the steering wheel fully the opposite direction.
- Use the flat trim clip remover and small flathead screwdriver to open the other wheel well access panel.
- Repeat Steps 2 through 7 for the other headlight bulb.
- Replace bulbs in pairs so both headlights have matching brightness and color.
Step 9: Reinstall the Wheel Well Access Panels
- Position each wheel well access panel back into place.
- Push the plastic clips in by hand.
- If a clip has a center pin, press the outer clip body in first, then press the center pin flush.
- If any fasteners were removed with a 10mm socket, reinstall them snugly.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for small wheel liner screws or bolts.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery If Disconnected
- Place the negative battery terminal back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Make sure the terminal does not twist by hand after tightening.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode and switch on the headlights.
- Verify both new bulbs work on low beam or high beam, depending on what you replaced.
- Check that the beam pattern looks even on a wall or garage door about 25 feet away.
- Confirm there are no warning messages on the instrument cluster.
- Look through the headlight lens after the first drive to make sure no moisture appears inside.
- If one new bulb does not light, turn the lights off and recheck the connector seating first.
