🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Highlander, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp housing in the engine bay. The exact bulb and steps depend on whether your low beams are HID (brighter/whiter with a brief warm-up) or halogen (instant on, more yellow).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let housings cool 10+ minutes.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass on any bulb; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your low beams are HID, disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes before touching the headlight wiring (HID systems use high voltage).
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools clear of the radiator fans.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip remover
- Flathead screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulbs (Halogen type, usually H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Low beam headlight bulbs (HID type, usually D4S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and locate the back of each headlamp housing.
- If your low beams are HID: use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) on reassembly.
- Trim clip remover = tool for popping plastic clips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb type you have
- Use a flashlight to look at the rear cover/label on the headlamp or check the bulb marking once removed.
- If the low beam “warms up” to full brightness and looks whiter/bluer, it’s likely HID (often D4S).
- If it turns on instantly and looks more yellow, it’s likely halogen (often H11).
Step 2: Make room (only if your hands don’t fit)
- On the tight side, remove the air inlet/snorkel clips using a trim clip remover or flathead screwdriver, then lift the duct out.
- If there’s a 10mm bolt holding a small bracket near your access area, remove it using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
Step 3: Remove the dust cover (rear cap)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- At the back of the headlamp, twist the round dust cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
Step 4A: Replace the low beam bulb (Halogen / H11-style)
- Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed) and pull straight back.
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- Install the new bulb (do not touch glass). Insert and twist clockwise to lock.
- Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then reconnect until it clicks.
Step 4B: Replace the low beam bulb (HID / D4S-style)
- Confirm the battery negative terminal is disconnected (use 10mm socket).
- Unplug the igniter/connector carefully by releasing its lock (use a flathead screwdriver only if needed).
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (usually twist counterclockwise), then pull the bulb straight out.
- Install the new HID bulb fully seated in the same orientation, then lock the retainer (twist clockwise to secure).
- Reconnect the connector securely.
Step 5: Reinstall the dust cover and any removed intake pieces
- Reinstall the dust cover and hand-tighten by twisting clockwise until fully seated.
- Reinstall the air duct/snorkel and clips using the trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver.
- If you removed any 10mm bolts, reinstall them using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2-5 for the opposite headlamp.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
Step 7: Reconnect battery (HID only)
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify both sides work on low beam.
- Check for flickering (HID) or a bulb-out warning; re-check connectors and dust cover sealing.
- At night, confirm the beam pattern looks even left-to-right.
