How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2009 Toyota Corolla (Low & High Beam)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools/parts list, safety tips, and fitment notes to prevent flicker

🔧 Corolla - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Corolla, the headlight bulbs are replaced from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. The key is to avoid touching the glass on the new halogen bulb, and to fully lock the bulb and connector so it won’t flicker or leak water.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool 10+ minutes; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ If you must touch the bulb, use clean gloves or a clean paper towel.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Short extension (3")

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Decide which bulbs you’re replacing: low beam, high beam, or both.
Quick question (so I list the exact bulbs and walk you through the right sockets): Are you replacing low beams, high beams, or both?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight housing
- Use a flashlight to locate the bulb area behind the headlight assembly.
- If access is tight near the radiator support cover/air snorkel, remove clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- If a small bracket or cover is in the way, remove bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and short extension (3").
Step 2: Disconnect the bulb connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb by hand.
- If stuck, wiggle gently—don’t yank wires.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise (about a quarter-turn) and pull it straight out.
- Use the flashlight to note the bulb’s alignment tabs so the new bulb installs the same way.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Compare the new bulb to the old one to confirm the same base and tab layout.
- Insert the new bulb without touching the glass (use nitrile gloves).
- Twist clockwise until it fully locks in place.
Step 5: Reconnect and reassemble
- Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
- Reinstall any covers/brackets you removed using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and short extension (3").
- Reinstall any push clips using the trim clip removal tool.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even color/brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on the setting you replaced (low or high).
- Check that the bulb is not flickering (usually means connector not fully seated).
- At night, verify both beams aim evenly; if one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully locked.
