🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Replacement

Replace both headlight bulbs so the light output matches side to side and you avoid doing the job twice. On your Corolla, this is a simple front-of-car service with limited room, but it’s still easier if you work carefully and don’t touch the glass on the new bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the headlights cool before starting; halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before opening the headlamp area.
  • Do not touch the glass on a new halogen bulb with bare fingers.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides stay bright and match color.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.
  • Work on one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the back of each headlamp housing.
  • If the air cleaner duct or nearby cover blocks access, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the fasteners and move the part aside.
  • If plastic clips are in the way, use a trim clip removal tool or flathead screwdriver carefully.

Step 2: Remove the bulb connector

  • Put on clean nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlamp and press the connector tab, then pull the electrical connector off the bulb.
  • Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Turn the bulb base counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, or release the retaining ring if your bulb style uses one.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • Do not force it; if it sticks, wiggle gently while keeping it straight.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Compare the new bulb to the old one to make sure the tabs and base match.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing without touching the glass.
  • Turn it clockwise by hand until it locks in place, or reinstall the retaining ring if equipped.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same process for the second bulb.
  • Replace both bulbs together so the color and brightness match.

Step 6: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any ducting, covers, clips, or fasteners you removed.
  • If you loosened any fasteners, snug them by hand; do not overtighten plastic parts.
  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both bulbs work on low and high beam if applicable.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both beams from the front of the car to confirm even light output.
  • Make sure the headlamp covers and connectors are fully seated.
  • If one bulb does not light, recheck the connector and bulb orientation.
  • Adjust headlight aim only if the beam looks off after reassembly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
