🔧 Altima - Low Beam Headlight Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces both front low beam headlight bulbs on your Altima. Replacing both sides together keeps brightness and color even, and it helps prevent the other older bulb from failing soon after.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let the bulbs cool before touching the headlamp area.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the bulb dust cap sealed tightly after replacement to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement, but keep the ignition OFF.
🔧 Required Tools

- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on level ground and turn the steering wheel straight.
- Set the parking brake and switch the ignition OFF.
- Open the hood and support it fully.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before handling bulbs.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out of electrical connectors.
- Trim clip remover is a flat plastic or metal tool used to lift plastic push clips without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Low Beam Bulb Covers
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp assembly.
- The low beam bulb is accessed from the rear of the headlamp housing.
- You will see a round rear cover or bulb access area behind the headlamp.
Step 2: Create Working Space on the Driver Side
- Use a flat trim clip remover to gently lift any plastic clips that block hand access near the headlamp area.
- If a small plastic splash shield or cover is in the way, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove its screw, then move the cover aside.
- Do not force plastic parts. They can become brittle with age.
- Take a photo before removing clips.
Step 3: Remove the Driver Side Bulb Connector
- Use your hand to grip the electrical connector at the back of the low beam bulb.
- Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight back.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling. Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Driver Side Low Beam Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Check that the old bulb’s sealing ring came out with the bulb.
- No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand with a twist-lock fitting.
Step 5: Install the New Driver Side Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new low beam bulb by its plastic base only.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the inside edge of the electrical connector, not to the bulb glass or metal terminals.
- Align the bulb tabs with the headlamp housing.
- Insert the bulb straight in, then rotate it clockwise until it locks firmly.
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
- If it resists, realign the tabs.
Step 6: Create Working Space on the Passenger Side
- Use a flashlight to inspect the rear of the passenger-side headlamp.
- Use a flat trim clip remover to lift any plastic clips that limit access.
- If a small cover blocks your hand, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw and move the cover aside.
Step 7: Remove the Passenger Side Bulb Connector
- Use your hand to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight rearward from the bulb.
- Do not twist the connector or pull on the wiring.
Step 8: Remove the Passenger Side Low Beam Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Keep the old bulb away from the new bulb so the glass does not get contaminated.
Step 9: Install the New Passenger Side Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to hold the new bulb by the plastic base.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area only.
- Insert the bulb into the headlamp housing with the tabs aligned.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks securely.
- Push the electrical connector on until the lock clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall Any Covers and Clips
- Use your hands to reposition any plastic covers that were moved.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall any screws removed earlier.
- Use your hand to press plastic clips back into place until seated.
- Do not overtighten plastic screws. Snug is enough.
Step 11: Test the Headlights
- Turn the ignition to ON or start the engine.
- Switch the low beam headlights ON.
- Stand in front of the vehicle and confirm both low beams work.
- Check high beams and turn signals to make sure nothing was disturbed.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both headlight beams look even on a wall or garage door about 25 feet away.
- ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower, the bulb may not be fully seated.
- ✅ Recheck the rear bulb area after the first drive to make sure the connectors are still locked in place.
- ✅ Dispose of old bulbs safely. Wrap them before placing them in trash so the glass does not break loose.
