🔧 Rogue - Headlight Bulb Replacement

This replaces the two headlight bulbs (left and right) so you get full nighttime visibility again. On your Rogue, the easiest access is usually through the front wheel-well liner behind each headlight.

Assumption: Your Rogue uses halogen headlight bulbs (most commonly H11 low beams). If you have factory LED headlights, the “bulb” is typically not serviceable and the headlamp assembly is repaired/replaced instead.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes; they get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If lifting the vehicle, support it with jack stands on solid ground (never rely on a jack alone).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lb range)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (low beam, H11) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the liner).
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access at the wheel-well liner

  • Use a flashlight to locate the small access area of the front fender liner behind the headlight.
  • Remove the liner fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlight housing.

Step 2: (Optional) Lift the front corner for more space

  • If your hands don’t fit comfortably, lift that corner of the vehicle using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) before reaching into the wheel well.

Step 3: Remove the old headlight bulb

  • Find the bulb socket at the back of the headlight. Twist the bulb/socket counterclockwise to unlock it.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling it off. Use nitrile gloves for grip.
  • Tip: If stuck, wiggle—don’t yank the wires.

Step 4: Install the new headlight bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
  • Insert the bulb into the housing, align the tabs, then twist clockwise to lock.

Step 5: Refit the wheel-well liner

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips/screws using the trim clip removal tool (to start clips) and Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Turn the steering wheel fully the other direction and repeat Steps 1–5 for the other headlight bulb.

Step 7: (If removed) Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts

  • Install the wheel and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Snug them using a 21mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lb).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides light up evenly.
  • Check high beams and turn signals while you’re there (quick safety check).
  • If one side doesn’t work, recheck that the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully locked.
