🔧 Accord - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the headlight bulbs from the engine-bay side without removing the bumper. The key is working carefully in the tight space and not touching the new bulb’s glass (finger oils can shorten bulb life).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (bulbs get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves; do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from fans/belts.
  • ⚠️ If a bulb was shattered, wear safety glasses and remove all glass pieces.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease packet - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn ignition OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlight housing.
  • If you’re not sure which bulb is out: turn the lights ON briefly to check low beams and high beams, then turn them OFF and let everything cool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use the headlight switch to check: low beams ON, then high beams ON.
  • Turn lights OFF and wait 10-15 minutes to cool.
  • Replacing both sides at once prevents mismatched brightness.

Step 2: Get access on the passenger side (if needed)

  • If your hand space is tight, use a trim clip removal tool (a forked pry tool for plastic clips) to pop up the air-intake snorkel clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension if any 10mm bolts are present on the snorkel/bracket, then lift the snorkel out of the way.

Step 3: Replace the passenger-side low beam bulb (H11)

  • Reach behind the headlight housing and locate the low beam bulb connector.
  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and install the new H11 bulb (do not touch the glass).
  • Twist the bulb clockwise to lock, then reconnect the connector until it clicks.
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the connector seal (not on the metal terminals).

Step 4: Replace the driver-side low beam bulb (H11)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the low beam connector behind the driver-side headlight.
  • Press the connector tab and pull it off.
  • Twist the old bulb counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
  • Install the new H11 bulb with nitrile gloves, twist clockwise to lock, and reconnect the connector.

Step 5: Replace the passenger-side high beam bulb (9005)

  • Locate the high beam bulb/connector (separate bulb location from the low beam).
  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Install the new 9005 bulb with nitrile gloves, twist clockwise to lock, then reconnect the connector.

Step 6: Replace the driver-side high beam bulb (9005)

  • Repeat the same process: unplug connector, twist bulb out, install new 9005, twist to lock, reconnect.
  • If access is tight, change your hand angle—don’t force the connector.

Step 7: Reinstall any intake snorkel/clips you removed

  • Reposition the snorkel.
  • Reinstall any 10mm bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension until snug.
  • Push the plastic clips back in by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: low beams, high beams, and turn signals/parking lights nearby.
  • Verify both sides match in color and brightness.
  • At night, confirm the beam pattern looks even; bulb replacement does not normally require aiming.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,500-₹4,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹900-₹3,000 (parts only, depending on bulb brand)

You Save: ₹600-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
