🔧 Escape - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Escape, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind each headlamp housing inside the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first—halogen bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If a bulb is shattered, wear gloves and eye protection when removing pieces.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the rear of each headlamp housing.
- Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam) by reading the bulb label on the old bulb base.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlamp
- Open the hood and locate the round plastic/rubber-backed bulb area behind each headlamp (driver and passenger side).
- Use a flashlight to see the bulb connector and the bulb’s twist-lock base.
Step 2: Unplug the bulb connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector’s locking tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab while pulling. Don’t pry hard—plastic breaks.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb’s base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the O-ring (seal) came out with the bulb and isn’t stuck in the housing.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Hold the new bulb by the base only. If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean paper towel.
- Line up the bulb’s tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing.
- Insert the bulb fully, then rotate clockwise to lock it in place.
Step 5: Reconnect and test
- Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Turn the headlights ON and verify the replaced side works.
- Repeat Steps 1-5 on the other headlight so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Verify low beams and high beams both work (use the stalk to switch).
- Check the rubber cap/seal (if equipped) is seated to keep moisture out.
- If the beam pattern looks odd, make sure the bulb is fully locked (not crooked).
