🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Wrangler, the headlight bulbs sit inside the headlamp housings behind the grille. You’ll remove the grille, pull each headlamp forward, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything and test low/high beams.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes before touching.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you choose to disconnect the battery, remove the negative cable first.
  • ⚠️ Pull the grille straight out; don’t yank hard on one corner.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (H13/9008) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Wrangler on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
  • If you want maximum safety: use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the grille

  • Open the hood.
  • Along the top edge of the grille, remove the plastic push-pin clips using a trim clip remover (a fork-shaped pry tool) or a flat-head screwdriver.
  • Grab the grille near the top corners and pull it straight forward to release the retaining clips. Pull evenly across the top.
  • Let the grille rest forward carefully so you can access the headlights.

Step 2: Remove the driver-side headlamp

  • Remove the 4 screws on the headlamp retaining ring using a Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Pull the headlamp assembly straight forward.

Step 3: Replace the driver-side bulb (H13/9008)

  • Unplug the bulb connector from the back of the bulb (press the lock tab and pull) by hand.
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise and remove it from the headlamp housing.
  • Install the new bulb into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass. If touched, wipe with rubbing alcohol and let dry.

Step 4: Reinstall the driver-side headlamp

  • Position the headlamp back into place.
  • Install the retaining ring screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver and snug them evenly. Don’t overtighten; screws are small.

Step 5: Repeat for the passenger-side headlamp

  • Use the same process: Torx T15 screwdriver to remove ring screws, swap the H13/9008 bulb, then reinstall.

Step 6: Reinstall the grille

  • Line up the grille clips and press the grille straight back into place with your hands.
  • Reinstall the top push-pin clips using the trim clip remover or press them in by hand.
  • If disconnected earlier, reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify low beam and high beam on both sides.
  • If one doesn’t light, re-check the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully twisted/locked.
  • At night, confirm the beam aim looks even side-to-side; if it looks off, tell me and I’ll walk you through headlight aiming on your Wrangler.
