🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the front grille, pull each headlight assembly forward, and swap the bulb from the rear of the housing. Doing both sides is the same process, and taking your time helps avoid broken clips and fingerprints on the new bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let headlights cool fully before touching the bulbs or housings.
  • 🧼 Do not touch the glass of halogen bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF and key out.
  • 👓 Wear safety glasses when popping grille clips to protect your eyes.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (H13/9008, halogen) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the headlight switch OFF.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and set up a flashlight so you can see the grille clips clearly.
  • 🧤 Put on gloves to keep oils off the new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the grille push-pins

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop up the center of each plastic push-pin along the top edge of the grille, then pull the pin out.
  • If a pin is stubborn, gently help it with a flat-blade screwdriver. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Pull the grille forward

  • Use your hands to pull the grille straight forward to release the lower clips.
  • Set the grille aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 3: Remove the headlight retaining ring (one side)

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the headlight retaining ring (the ring around the headlight).
  • Keep the screws together so they don’t get lost.

Step 4: Pull the headlight out and disconnect the bulb

  • Carefully pull the headlight housing forward.
  • Reach behind the housing and unplug the headlight connector from the bulb (press the tab, then pull).

Step 5: Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it out of the headlight housing.
  • Install the new H13/9008 bulb into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area (not on the bulb glass), then plug the connector back in until it clicks.
  • If you touched the bulb, clean with alcohol.

Step 6: Reinstall the headlight and retaining ring

  • Position the headlight back into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining ring screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug them evenly (do not overtighten).

Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for the other side.

Step 8: Reinstall the grille

  • Line up the grille and push it in until the lower clips snap into place.
  • Reinstall the top push-pins: insert the pin body, then press the center down to lock.

✅ After Repair

  • 💡 Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
  • 🔦 Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work (the same bulb does both filaments on most setups).
  • 👀 Check that the grille is fully clipped in and not rattling.
