🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the two front headlight bulbs (left and right). On your Wrangler, each headlight uses one bulb that handles both low and high beams, so swapping both bulbs restores brightness and keeps the color matched.

Assumption: Stock halogen headlights using H13/9008 bulbs (most Sahara models). Factory LED/HID setups differ.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights off and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oils on the glass can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass; hold it by the base only.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you’ll lose radio clock presets.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Flat trim tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (H13/9008 halogen) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
  • If you want extra safety: disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket (negative is the “-” terminal).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the passenger-side headlight bulb

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the passenger-side headlight housing (rear of the headlamp, inside the engine bay).
  • If a wiring clip or hose slightly blocks your hand, gently move it aside using a flat trim tool. Move the clip, not the wires.

Step 2: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb (wiggle gently; don’t yank).

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (passenger side)

  • Compare the new H13/9008 bulb to the old one to confirm the same locking tabs.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing (it will only seat correctly one way).
  • Rotate clockwise about a 1/4 turn until it locks fully. Torque: Hand-tight only (no torque spec; plastic housing)
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Access the driver-side headlight bulb

  • Use a flashlight and locate the bulb at the rear of the driver-side headlight housing.
  • Space is tighter near the battery; if needed, gently free up room by popping any nearby harness clips using a flat trim tool.

Step 6: Replace the driver-side bulb

  • Unplug the connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off.
  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a 1/4 turn and remove it.
  • Install the new bulb, rotate clockwise to lock. Torque: Hand-tight only (no torque spec; plastic housing)
  • Reconnect the connector until it clicks.

Step 7: If battery was disconnected, reconnect it

  • Install and tighten the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Torque: Snug (no published spec for this task)

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and check low beam and high beam on both sides.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights off and re-check the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully locked.
  • Verify the rubber/connector area is secure so moisture can’t get into the housing.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
