🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Wrangler, the headlight bulb is accessed from behind the headlamp housing under the hood. You’ll unplug the connector, twist the bulb out, install the new bulb, and test the lights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool first—bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life). Use clean gloves.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before unplugging anything.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Flat trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (halogen, H13/9008) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Decide which headlights you have:
    • If there’s a removable bulb connector going into the back of the headlamp: you have replaceable halogen bulbs.
    • If the back looks like a sealed module with no bulb you can twist out: you likely have an LED headlamp assembly (the “bulb” isn’t separately serviceable).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm headlight type

  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for a round bulb base you can twist out.
  • If you do NOT see a twist-out bulb base, stop here and tell me if your headlamps are LED—those require headlamp assembly service, not bulb replacement.

Step 2: Make room (only if your hand won’t fit)

  • If the passenger side is tight near the air intake, use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen the intake clamp(s) just enough to move the tube/box slightly.
  • If a plastic push-clip is in your way, use a flat trim tool to pop it up carefully.
  • More space prevents broken connectors.

Step 3: Unplug the headlight bulb connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • At the back of the headlamp, grasp the electrical connector and pull it straight off the bulb base.
  • If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently—don’t yank on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock it (about a quarter turn), then pull it straight out.
  • Note the orientation tabs so the new bulb goes in the same way.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new H13/9008 headlight bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol (use a clean lint-free cloth).

Step 6: Reconnect the connector

  • Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until fully seated.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps for the other headlight.
  • If you loosened any intake parts, reinstall them and tighten with the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, do not overtighten).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm low beams work on both sides.
  • Switch to high beams and confirm both sides change brightness (on halogen H13, high/low are in the same bulb).
  • If one side doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully seated and the bulb is locked.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
