🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: This covers both front low-beam headlight bulbs. If you meant the high beams, the physical process is the same but the bulb type is different.

Replacing both headlight bulbs at the same time keeps light output even on both sides. On your Silverado, the headlamp assembly comes out first, then the bulb is swapped from the back of the housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching them. Hot bulbs can burn you.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil shortens bulb life.
  • Use a clean glove or paper towel when installing new bulbs.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have room to work at the front corners.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Pull the hood release and secure the hood fully open.

Step 2: Remove the headlamp bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet with a short extension to remove the two upper headlamp mounting bolts on the side you are servicing.
  • Keep the bolts in a safe place.

Step 3: Release the headlamp assembly

  • Pull the headlamp assembly straight forward to release the locating pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool gently at the edge.
  • Do not force the lens.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Reach behind the headlamp assembly and unplug the electrical connector from the bulb.
  • Press the tab on the connector before pulling it off.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull the bulb out of the housing.
  • Use gloves so you do not touch the new bulb glass later.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • Insert the new bulb into the socket the same way the old one came out.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the headlamp assembly

  • Line up the locating pins and slide the assembly back into place.
  • Reinstall the two 10mm bolts and tighten them snugly.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same process on the opposite headlight.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
  • Check high beams and parking lights while you are there.
  • Make sure the beam pattern looks even on both sides.
