🔧 Acadia - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)

On your Acadia, the easiest way to replace the headlight bulbs is usually through the front wheel-well liner behind each headlamp. The exact bulb and steps depend on whether your low beams are halogen or HID/LED, so you’ll confirm the bulb type first and then follow the matching steps.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ If equipped with HID, the igniter can generate very high voltage—turn lights OFF, remove key, and wait at least 5 minutes before unplugging anything.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle on jack stands before working in the wheel well.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass on halogen or HID bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use nitrile gloves.
  • ⚠️ If your low beams are LED, the “bulb” is often not serviceable; it may require headlamp assembly/module replacement.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended for HID/LED systems; not required for halogen but still okay to do.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Short 1/4" extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (Halogen type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Low beam headlight bulb (HID type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more hand room).
  • Open the hood and confirm what you have:
    • Halogen usually has a simple 2-wire plug on the bulb.
    • HID usually has a larger base/igniter on the bulb.
    • If you see an LED module/heat sink and no removable bulb, it may be non-serviceable.
  • If you suspect HID/LED: disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket (if your Acadia’s battery terminal uses 10mm). If your terminal differs, stop and tell me what size it is.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the wheel (optional but recommended)

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet to break the front wheel lug nuts loose about 1/4 turn (do not remove yet).

Step 2: Lift and support the front corner

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner you’re working on.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 3: Remove the wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts and take the wheel off.

Step 4: Open the wheel-well liner access

  • Use a flashlight to locate the access area behind the headlamp.
  • Remove the fasteners in that area using a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and short 1/4" extension.
  • Remove any plastic push-clips using a trim clip removal tool.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp. Don’t crease the liner.

Step 5: Remove the rear headlamp dust cap (if equipped)

  • Reach behind the headlamp and remove the cap by hand (typically twists off).
  • Use nitrile gloves so you don’t contaminate the new bulb.

Step 6A: Replace the low beam bulb (Halogen path)

  • Unplug the bulb connector by hand (press the tab and pull straight back).
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then remove it.
  • Install the new bulb (same orientation), then twist clockwise to lock.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 6B: Replace the low beam bulb (HID path)

  • Confirm the headlights are OFF and you waited at least 5 minutes.
  • Disconnect the bulb/igniter connector by hand (release the lock tab, then pull straight off).
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then remove it.
  • Install the new HID bulb without touching the glass, and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Reconnect the igniter/connector fully (it must seat squarely).

Step 7: Reinstall the dust cap and wheel-well liner

  • Reinstall the rear dust cap by hand (make sure it seals evenly).
  • Reposition the liner and reinstall screws/clips using the 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts

  • Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–8 for the other headlight.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for color match.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
  • Check high beams and turn signals while you’re there (confirms nothing else got unplugged).
  • If you disconnected the battery, reset your clock/radio presets if needed.
  • If a headlight is out or flickers (especially HID), recheck the connector seating and bulb lock position.
