🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: you want to replace both low beam and high beam bulbs on your Camry. This job is straightforward, but the headlamp housings are tight, so patience helps. Work one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Headlight bulbs get very hot; let them cool completely before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If your car has HID or LED headlamp units, the bulb service procedure is different and may require extra care around high-voltage components. This guide assumes standard bulb replacement.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for bulb replacement, but keep the ignition off.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine bay is cool.
  • Have both new bulbs ready before removing the old ones.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the engine bay access area

  • Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlamp assembly.
  • If access is tight, remove any plastic air duct or cover pieces blocking the rear of the lamp using a 10mm socket and trim panel tool.
  • Keep all fasteners in a tray.

Step 2: Replace the low beam bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp and find the low beam bulb socket.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out.
  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new low beam bulb without touching the glass.
  • Reinstall the socket and twist it clockwise until locked.
  • Match the bulb tabs before twisting.

Step 3: Replace the high beam bulb

  • Locate the high beam bulb socket on the back of the same headlamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
  • Pull the socket out, then remove the old bulb.
  • Install the new high beam bulb.
  • Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Do one side at a time.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same low beam and high beam replacement on the opposite headlamp.
  • Make sure each bulb is fully seated and locked before moving on.

Step 5: Reinstall any removed covers

  • Put back any air ducts, covers, or trim pieces removed for access.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten any removed fasteners snugly.
  • Torque to hand-tight only for plastic retainers unless a fastener spec is marked on the part.

Step 6: Test the lights

  • Turn on the low beams and check both sides.
  • Turn on the high beams and confirm both bulbs work.
  • If one does not light, recheck the connector and bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the headlamps are aimed normally on a flat surface.
  • Verify both low beam and high beam operation before driving at night.
  • If a bulb does not work, swap it carefully and recheck the socket fit.
