How to Replace Both Headlight Bulbs on a 2007-2018 Nissan Altima (H11 & 9005) (Trim: SV | Body: Sedan)
Step-by-step low and high beam bulb swap with tools list, parts, safety tips, and access methods for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017
🔧 Altima - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the left and right headlight bulbs without removing the headlight housing. The job is mostly about gaining access behind the headlamp, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, and confirming beam operation afterward.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the headlight switch OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- 🔸 Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸 Support the car with jack stands if you use the wheel-well access method.
- 🔸 If you disconnect the battery, keep the key away from the car while working.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- Flashlight
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔸 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the headlights OFF.
- 🔸 Open the hood and confirm which bulb you’re replacing: low beam (H11) or high beam (9005). If you’re not sure, tell me which light is out (low beam vs high beam) and I’ll point you to the exact socket location.
- 🔸 Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
- 🔸 If access is too tight from the top, plan to use the wheel-well method (jack + stands).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify the failed bulb
- Turn the headlight switch ON briefly, then OFF, and confirm which side and which beam is out (low vs high).
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp and identify the correct bulb socket (low beam and high beam are separate).
Step 2: Choose your access method
- Top access (under hood): Try this first for both sides.
- Wheel-well access: Use this if your hand space is too tight.
Step 3 (Top access): Create working room if needed
- If the intake snorkel/duct is in your way, remove fasteners with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Release any plastic push-clips using a trim clip removal tool. A trim clip tool is a forked pry tool for plastic clips.
- Move the ducting aside without forcing it.
Step 4 (Wheel-well access): Safely raise the front corner (if needed)
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Set the car onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) before reaching into the wheel well.
Step 5 (Wheel-well access): Pull back the splash shield
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on to open up space.
- Remove the needed plastic clips/screws with a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp (don’t tear it).
Step 6: Remove the bulb electrical connector
- At the back of the headlamp, press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- Use nitrile gloves for grip and a flashlight for visibility.
Step 7: Remove the old bulb
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Use a flashlight and keep the bulb aligned so you don’t damage the socket.
Step 8: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it fully locks.
- If it won’t lock, don’t force it.
Step 9: Reconnect and test
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Turn headlights ON and confirm that bulb works (correct beam and correct side).
- Repeat Steps 6–9 for the other side so both bulbs match color/brightness.
Step 10: Reassemble removed parts
- If you used the wheel-well method, reinstall the liner clips/screws using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
- If you removed intake ducting, reinstall using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- If the car is on stands, raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, then lower the car.
✅ After Repair
- 🔸 Test low beams, high beams, and turn signals to make sure nothing else was disturbed.
- 🔸 At night, confirm the beams look even left-to-right; if one looks off, the bulb may not be seated fully.
- 🔸 Keep the old working bulb as an emergency spare only if it still lights reliably.
